Jackie grew up in Weatherford, Oklahoma, where she remembered having the freedom to explore the town and where she struck up a friendship with the elderly neighbor next door. She graduated from Woodward High School after the family moved to Woodward, Oklahoma. She married Walter Adams in 1956 and joined him in working on the family farm in Sharon, Oklahoma. Their daughters, Dana Gail and Terri Kay, completed their family, and Jackie valued staying home in their early childhood years. Jackie helped teach many friends and family to water ski, and they took frequent family vacations and snow skiing trips as the girls grew up.
Once her daughters started school, Jackie commuted to Northwestern State University to complete her college education and earn her teaching certificate. Her drive to complete her degree as a non-traditional student may have influenced her daughters, who both returned to school for professional degrees. She taught elementary and junior high math to students at Sharon-Mutual Schools from 1971-80. Students were wary of “the look” when they misbehaved in her class, but she had a soft spot for the kids who liked a good joke or prank. She and a fellow teacher directed one of the only musical school plays at Sharon-Mutual.
Jackie encouraged her daughters to challenge themselves in school and with other activities. She rarely missed a basketball game as Terri excelled at every level of play, and she took her first international trip to visit Dana in Brazil during her exchange year.
After her retirement from teaching, Jackie spent time as a landman, took undergraduate college courses and a year of law school as she looked for a new direction. She entered another phase of life when she became reacquainted with Paul Nelson at a Woodward High School reunion. They married in 1985 and participated in community life in Kingfisher and later in Cedar Valley. Jackie worked on her golf game, participated in leagues and tournaments, watched the antics of her backyard birds, and was very proud of her hole-in-one plaque.
Jackie and Paul enjoyed many trips throughout the US, and even in Mexico, with their travel trailer. They visited multiple local and international Lions Clubs when Paul served as District Governor for Lions International. They hosted many visits from their children and grandchildren. Jackie referred to Paul as her “best friend” and suffered a great loss with his death in 2006.
Jackie had long-term friendships and good neighbors to sustain her after losing Paul. Bridge clubs and P.E.O. nurtured other local relationships. Jackie took special trips with her daughters to New York, Europe, and Puerto Rico. She moved to Oklahoma City to be closer to family and became part of her new community there. She loved following life changes, activities, and accomplishments of her children, grandchildren, and extended family.
Jackie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul; her brother, Warren Heatley; and her sister, Laverne Johnson. She is survived by her daughters, Dana Stone and Terri Blakley, grandchildren Erin Fong, Sean Stone, Katherine Blakley, Matthew Blakley, Sarah Blakley; great-grandchildren Hudson Fong, Parker Fong, Eva Stone, Ronan Stone, soon-to-be-born Juliet Blakley; and multiple nieces and nephews.
