James N. Wells, 85, father, grandfather and friend, passed away Friday, Feb. 14, 2020. Passing on Valentine’s Day was fitting because he gave his heart to so many. He leaves daughters Susan Wells, Cathy (Jim) Redfearn and Nelda (Mike) Ramsey; son Alan (Alison) LeMay; brother Robert Wells, seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. His wife, parents and three siblings preceded him in death.
Born in Okmulgee to Odus and Ruth Wells, he was a longtime resident of Oklahoma City. He graduated from Hughes High School in 1953 and Draughon’s Business School in 1955. He started work for Hahn-Cook Funeral Home while in school, retiring 60 years later. His titles included Funeral Director, Manager and Consultant, but his most important role was as a mentor to the many young employees he trained. He taught them compassion, professionalism and composure. They learned how to best care for people during their most difficult times. He directed thousands of funerals and touched many lives with a special gift of caring for grieving families. His influence continues in the industry today.
He married the love of his life, Viola LeMay, in 1967, continuing a lifelong adoration for her after her death in 1977. He was kind and compassionate and full of humor to everyone. Faithful to God and his community, he was a longtime member of Christ The King Catholic Church and the Westside Rotary Club. He was an avid supporter of Pops concerts and Broadway plays. He enjoyed collecting art and antiques, gardening and listening to jazz. Most of all he adored his grandchildren. His love, kindness and wisdom will live with us forever.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday Feb. 18th from 6-8 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Christ The King Catholic Church. Tributes may be left for the family by visiting www.hahncookfuneral.com.
