She was Valedictorian of her high school graduating class, editor of the school yearbook and received the D.A.R. Award. On her 8th birthday, Jean received a piano which set the course for her academic, spiritual and artistic pursuits. She had perfect pitch. Throughout middle and high school, she played piano for the Presbyterian Church and played clarinet in the high school band.
She attended Gulf Park Junior College for Women in Gulfport, MS, earning a double major in speech and music. She was Valedictorian, received the French Award and was secretary of the senior class. She was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and the synchronized swimming team.
In 1948, Jean transferred to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and graduated with honors with a degree in music theory.
