Larry Eugene Smith was born on January 26, 1952, in Sacramento, California, to Norman Harold Smith and Zella Delores Hill (previously Mitchell and Smith). He proudly served in the United States Army and later attended trade school. Larry spent much of his early life in California before making Oklahoma his home in 1998.
Larry loved Elvis Presley, country music, and the classic sounds of 1950's and 1960s music. His perfect day was one spent by the ocean with his family, feeding the squirrels and enjoying the peaceful beauty of nature. He had a gift for humor—always telling jokes, teasing, and getting a good laugh or reaction out of those around him. His joy was contagious.
Larry was the proud father of five children, each of whom carries a part of his legacy:
Kim shared, “My dad taught me how to be responsible and strong. I learned a love for nature and how to appreciate and respect it. He taught me how to be brave, how to love, and how to show strength even when times get hard”.
Sara said, “Dad’s strength and love reached me and carried me through, even when we were apart — as it still does today. He taught me the love of gardening, fishing, and the ocean. He showed me how to barbecue and mow the lawn. He shared his love of camping and the importance of taking care of your vehicle.”
Brileigh reflected, “My dad taught me how to be strong. I didn’t always notice it growing up, but now I do. Even when life was hard, he kept going. When I go through hard things now, because of him, I will always carry the strength he gave me.”
Larry loved his family fiercely and always wanted the very best for them.
He will be remembered as a strong, proud soldier, a devoted son, a loving father, a man of God, and a man who lived with heart, humor, and resilience. Larry was a member of the Assembly of God. He enjoyed the ocean, pizza, family gatherings, singing, playing guitar, watching his favorite shows, and spending time with his beloved fur babies, Missy (Pig) and Princy.
Larry’s significant life accomplishments included serving in the military, attending truck driving school, working at McClellan Air Force Base in California, and later transferring to Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma.
He was married to Cleaette McAddams and later to Gina Smith, who preceded him in death in 2014. He is also preceded in death by his father Norman Smith, his sister, Susan Smith, and his brother-in-law, Dennis McGinnis.
Larry is survived by his mother, Zella Hill, children, Kimberly Mae Smith of Orangevale, CA, Sara Raylene Hallford and her husband William of Orangevale, CA, Brileigh Marie Quick and her husband Clarence of Kingfisher, OK, Aaron Lough of Oklahoma City, OK, Ethan Lough and his wife Amber of Yukon, OK. He is also survived by his brother Timmy Smith of Miami, OK, his sisters Brenda Smith of Carl Junction, MO, and Kathy McGinnis of Joplin, MO, and his seven cherished grandchildren, Nathan, Dylan, Lucas, Zoey, Emma, Kade, and Hallie.
Larry’s love, laughter, and strength will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
