LaVeta Metts Martin
October 12, 1924 – July 14, 2020
LaVeta Metts Martin passed away peacefully on July 14, 2020 after a brave battle with congestive heart failure. LaVeta was born on October 12, 1924 in Adairsville, Georgia to Carey and Dakota Metts. She spent her early life in Georgia and the Carolinas, graduating from Greensboro Sr. High School in 1941. She attended Meredith Women's College as a student of religious studies. LaVeta later moved to Washington D.C. where she worked at the Pentagon as a typist for the U.S. Army in the Office of the Chief of Staff, Training Division. She met her future husband, Lindsey E. Martin, at Calvary Baptist Church where they married in November 1948. Lindsey and LaVeta started their family in Washington D.C., but returned to Lindsey's home state of Oklahoma settling in Oklahoma City in 1962. LaVeta was a devoted full-time mother to six children, and involved with all their many activities. Her youngest son, David, was always dear to her heart, having special needs with Down Syndrome. She was a dedicated member of Spring Creek Baptist Church, an OU Sooners Fan, founding member of Concordia Life Plan Community, a member of Town Hall, Music Club, and Daughters of the Nile. She was an avid reader, and she gave many book reviews to her fellow residents at Concordia. Lindsey and LaVeta loved to travel and she was proud to say she had visited six continents. She was an excellent bridge player, belonging to and founding several groups, where she continued to play until recently. She will be truly missed by all of her family and friends for her kind, loving and generous nature, cheerful attitude and her positive outlook on life. LaVeta was preceded in death by her husband, Lindsey Martin and their son, David. She is survived by her son, Brad Martin, her daughters Margaret Martin (Patrick Riley), Holly Bockow (Lester), Marylee Murphy (Tim), Bette Burnett (Paul) and grandchildren Lauren Bockow, Kyle Burnett, Kevin Burnett, Margo Murphy, Kailey Murphy, Molly Tellone (Chris), and great-granddaughter Willow Tellone. The family would like to thank the staff of the Concordia Life Plan Community for their loving care and support over the past few months.
