Lila Mae Corkle Singleton, Edmond, Oklahoma, passed away on Monday, June 11, 2018, at Oklahoma Heart Hospital. Lila was born February 23, 1929 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the fourth child of Alfred and Nellie Corkle.
Lila attended Culbertson Grade School, Webster Junior High, and Central High School in Oklahoma City graduating in 1947. She worked as a clerk for variety store T.G.&Y. and as an accounting clerk with Southwestern Bell Telephone before marrying Sandy Hardin Singleton on January 27, 1950. After moving to Norman, Oklahoma in 1968, she worked in retail sales at J.C. Penney and Hale’s Dress Shop. Lila said her life was filled beyond measure as a wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, and volunteer.
Lila and Sandy were married for 60 years and lived in many places while Sandy was a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and working in the oil industry. They moved to Edmond, Oklahoma in 1978. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Amy and Gary Capshaw of Santa Fe, NM; son and daughter-in-law Sandy and Jacquelyn Singleton of Bartlesville, OK; son and daughter-in-law Tim and Jan Singleton of Edmond, OK; sisters Opal Pemberton and Peggy Rose; sister-in-law Ansolea Corkle; brother-in-law Leslie Harrison; grandchildren Lyndsay, Ryan, Kate, Skye, and Jessica; great grandchildren Jackson, James, and Thomas; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Sandy Singleton, and her brothers, Eugene, Robert, and Vernon Corkle.
Lila loved traveling, music, golf, poetry, playing the piano by ear, and even taking tap dancing lessons. Lila and Sandy devoted time and energy promoting and supporting the American Banjo Museum, which relocated to Oklahoma City in 2009. They attended banjo rallies and events in every part of the country and made enduring friends who shared their passion for music and golf. They traveled worldwide, sightseeing, playing golf, and singing with the Westminster Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir. As a lifelong Christian and an active member of Westminster for more than 30 years, Lila was a dedicated and loving volunteer. There are hundreds of people and organizations that have been touched by her abounding kindness.
We will miss her in more ways than we can express - her beautiful face, twinkling eyes, infectious laugh, gentle and loving touch, and her compassion for all living things. Many describe Lila as the sweetest person they’ve ever met with a pure and genuine servant’s heart. Lila and Sandy created a family legacy of love and kindness that will live on for many years.
