Lois Jean Baker, 84, of OKC passed from this life on March 11, 2020 with her loving family by her side. Services have been entrusted to the care of Advantage Funeral Service and a celebration of her life will be held at the funeral home chapel at 7720 S. Penn in S. OKC at 2pm on Wednesday, March 18, 2020. Interment will follow at Arlington Memory Gardens in Midwest City. Public visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 12-8pm.
Lois Jean Palmer was born on June 8, 1935 in Minden, LA to Maurice Arvil and Myrtle Alice (Wagner) Palmer. She was raised in Louisiana and relocated to OK following high school. She began attending Exchange Ave Baptist Church where she would meet the love of her life, Nauman Baker. Jean and Nauman were married in 1954 and spent over six decades together before his passing in 2017.
Jean worked doing payroll for the FAA in the mid 1950-1960’s. She spent the next two decades raising her two daughters Karri and Diane. Jean’s faith played an important part in her life and she was a longtime member of both Exchange Ave Baptist Church and First Presbyterian Church in OKC.
Jean Baker was a classy woman who had impeccable manners and was always proper. She enjoyed playing cards with her husband and neighbors, eating Del Rancho Steak Sandwich Supremes, gardening, and traveling. She was a huge OU Football fan. She loved to cook for holidays and family events and being from Louisiana, her Cajun gumbo was always a favorite. She was a talented seamstress and she often made her children clothing from scratch.
Family was always a top priority for Jean Baker. She cherished her trips to Sulphur and McGee Creek in Stringtown, where she often camped and fished with her children. She also loved to attend family reunions at the family homestead at the Wagner Hill Plantation in Grand Cane, LA. Nothing made her happier than spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jean loved her family unconditionally and always welcomed anyone into her home.
She was a loving mother, a caring sister, a proud grandmother and great grandmother, a loving Aunt and a trusted friend who will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents: Myrtle “Alice” Wagner Palmer and Maurice “Arvil” Palmer; husband Nauman P. Baker; aunt Dorothy K. Sneed; two sisters: Patsy Martin and Gayle Flower; and a niece Janet “Jan” Kay Martin Johnston.
She is survived by her two daughters: Diane Baker Caldwell and husband Stephen Barre of Atlanta, GA, Karri Lynn Baker and fiancé Clint Carter of OKC, OK; four grandchildren: Skylar Garland Vowell, Brannon Joseph Vowell and wife Chelsea, Sosha Nicole Christmas, and Aurora Audrey Caldwell; two great grandchildren: Lilah Beth Vowell and Dawson Knox Vowell; two nieces: Barbara Martin Lee of Minden, LA and Holly Lynn Flower Nevins of Newport, OR; as well as a cousin Becky Ann Wagner Bates.
