

The first child of Leora and Floyd Freeman, Mary Lou was born on September 1, 1930 in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania. She spent her childhood in Medicine Park, OK and Lawton, Ok, graduating from Lawton High School. She moved to Oklahoma City to attend college, where she met her future husband. She graduated from Oklahoma City University with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 1952. She would return to OCU later in life to complete her Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education.
She devoted her professional life and her family life to children. She taught, developed curricula, and coordinated children’s services in a number of public schools, private agencies, and churches, and served as a consultant and trainer to child care providers. She was also a faithful participant throughout her life in organizations and activities affiliated with the United Methodist Church. UM Church of the Servant in Oklahoma City has been her church home for the past 40 years. Her passions over the years included caring for her grandchildren, volunteering at church, traveling, piano, photography, and writing about her childhood.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 59 years, Adnell Acers; her children, Kent Acers, Tammy Acers, Kevin Acers and daughter-in-law, Lee Acers, all of Oklahoma City; her grandchildren, Mia Acers of Denver, CO, Jesse Acers of Oklahoma City, Sharon Acers of Oklahoma City, Nicholas Acers of Oklahoma City, and Travis Moore of Oklahoma City; great-grandchildren, Chelsea Acers and Aidan Hatley, both of Denver, and Liam and Aspen Moore of Oklahoma City; sisters, Kathy Warner of Oklahoma City and Linda Oswalt of Austin, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leora and Floyd Freeman, and her brother, James Freeman.
Funeral Services will be held at United Methodist Church of the Servant in Oklahoma City, 1:00 p.m., Friday, July 19, 2013. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are encouraged to any program that promotes the interests and well being of children.
