Mary Kathryn (Stewart) Wells, 98, passed from this life on February 8, 2011. Mary was born in Bloomville, Ohio, on December 1, 1912. She was the 4th of five children born to Charles Hepburn Stewart, carriage maker and auto mechanic, and Jennie Schlater Stewart, home maker. She and her siblings were all college educated, taking turns working to help each other financially while going to school. She graduated from Lake Erie College for Women, after which she taught high school mathematics for several years. She married Virgil H. Wells on May 1, 1937. They were devoted to each other until his death November 4, 2009. We believe they are now happily re-united. Mary was a home-maker, stay at home mother, and corporate wife, who supported her husband’s 40 year career as an executive with Union Carbide Corporation. Together they raised 3 children and resided in Ohio, West Virginia, New York, and Connecticut. Mary was a golfer and bridge player, and made many life-long friends. After retirement, Virgil and Mary moved to Florida, which they enjoyed together for 30 years. In 2000 they moved to Oklahoma City to be near their eldest son, Jim Wells, MD, and his wife Mary. She is survived by them as well as by son Robert S. Wells, MD, and his wife Barbara of Denver, CO; and by daughter Margaret Shaw and her husband Stanley of Bay Village, Ohio. She also leaves 5 grandchildren, 3 with spouses; 6 great-grandchildren; and 7 step great-grandchildren. Her step family loved and supported her during her later declining years in a way that was most comforting to her and to the family as a whole. Her family wishes to thank all her caregivers, especially L. Scott Owen, MD, his staff, and his wife Nicole; and daughter-in-law Mary R. Wells. Also, Physicians Choice Hospice; and caregivers, especially Caylin, Catha, Jimmie, LaTress, Sadie, Georgia & Charlotte.
Visitation will be Saturday, February 12 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday, February 13 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, February 14, 2011, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 50th and Grove, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma with burial in Resurrection Memorial Cemetery.
