August 21, 1921 – August 7, 2018
Maurine W. Kurshildgen passed into the presence of our loving Lord Tuesday, August 7, 2018, after an extended illness for the past 6 years. A native of Oklahoma, Maurine was born in Foss, Oklahoma August 21, 1921 and at the age of four she began her life-long love of piano and classical music. A dedicated Christian, her love of our Lord Jesus Christ was her heart and soul. Second to that was her love of piano music where she played complicated classical music and had a beautiful singing voice. Maurine earned her Master’s Degree in Piano at the University of Oklahoma and went on to become a faculty member teaching piano at OU, Southwestern University in Alva and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She attended the Julliard School of Music in New York City. After her son was born, the family moved from Detroit in 1962 to settle in San Antonio. Maurine raised her son until she obtained her public school teacher certificate in 1966 and entered the field of teaching choir in the Northeast Independent School District at Krueger Middle School, until retiring in 1984. Maurine was a sweet, kind, gentle and loving person and was loved by all who knew her. As a devoted wife and mother, she deeply loved them and her extended family in Oklahoma City. Her church home was First Presbyterian Church, San Antonio. Ministers, Deacons and congregational members were faithful in praying and ministering to her after the passing of her beloved husband in 1995 and continued to do so until she moved to League City to live with her son in 2012. Maurine’s survivors are her son, Curt W. Kurshildgen of League City, nieces and nephew Diana Gamble Ryan, Elena Gamble, Linda Gamble Hood and husband Ron and their family, Kent Gamble and wife Leslie and their family, and Gina Gamble Patrick and her family all of Oklahoma City and Edmond. Life long friends and “angels on earth” who loved and cared for Maurine as their own include Annie Gonzales, Andrea and Mark Swanson, Carrie Copeland, and Dr. Louis Zbinden, retired senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church. Margo Ricarte of Deer Park, Texas and her caregiver and friend Jenifer Stephens of League City. After decades of teaching piano and music to thousands of students, many returned to say thank you for her encouragement and instilling the love of music in them. The nurses and doctors of Providence Hospice Care Sugarland gave her loving and excellent care for the past few years after she developed medical complications and dementia. Maurine was preceded in death by her husband, J. Wesley Kurshildgen, sister and brother-in-law Trecil and Tuttle J. Gamble III, and her parents Jesse Calvin and Nancy Leola Wagnon.
