Maynard J. Greenberg, 88, passed away on the morning of September 16, at his home in Oklahoma City. He was born on March 14, 1933, in Wichita, Kansas, to Ted and Esther Greenberg. When Maynard was an infant the family moved to Oklahoma City. Maynard grew up in Oklahoma City, and he graduated from Classen High School where he played on the basketball and football teams. He attended the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, where he graduated with a degree in business administration. Maynard met his wife, Miriam, in Miami Beach, Florida, and they were married on August 21, 1955.
Upon Maynard’s graduation from college, Maynard and Miriam settled in Oklahoma City, and Maynard operated the Streets clothing stores with his father, Ted. Streets clothing stores had locations in Oklahoma City, and surrounding communities, and many Oklahomans shopped at Streets for women’s and children’s clothing. Maynard continued to run Streets until its closure in 1991.
Maynard was a very active member of the Oklahoma City community and he was involved in various Oklahoma City organizations including serving on the boards of: Temple B’Nai Israel, the Jewish Federation of Greater Oklahoma City, St. Anthony Hospital, the Oklahoma City Retailers Association, and the Better Business Bureau of Central Oklahoma.
He had a tremendous love of life. He had a keen sense of humor, and he never met a stranger. His jokes and sayings were legendary. He enjoyed all kinds of food, and he loved planning meals and eating out.
Maynard was an outstanding and avid poker player in Oklahoma and Las Vegas casinos. He took great joy for many years from playing competitive bridge with Miriam, and traveling the world with her.
Maynard was devoted to and generous to his family, extended family, and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife Miriam, his son Kenneth, and his siblings Alan C. Greenberg and DiAnne Hirsch. He is survived by his daughter, Sherri Greenberg and son-in-law, Cary Ferchill; his grandson, Jordan Ferchill and wife Katherine Duong; his grandson Price Ferchill and wife Hillary Chaffin, and his granddaughter, Natalie Greenberg.
Graveside service at Temple B’Nai Israel Cemetery 13343 N. Kelley Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73131 on Friday, September 24, at 10:00 am, followed by a memorial service via Zoom, at 1:30 pm, with Rabbi Vered Harris officiating.
Donations can be made in memory of Maynard Greenberg to the Greenberg Beautification Fund at Temple B’Nai Israel in Oklahoma City and to the Jewish Federation of Greater Oklahoma City.
