Michael Joseph Farrell Sr, 68, was born in Ionia, Michigan to Don and Tommie (Lane) Farrell. He attended both Whitter Junior and Swartz Creek High Schools, growing up alongside his siblings Don, Charlene, Karen, and Richard.
Michael’s life was defined by the strength of family. He was overjoyed when his father remarried, gaining a “bonus mom” in Shirley Farrell and three additional siblings—Peggy, Pat, and Mike Frost. Together, they formed a deeply cohesive blended family. He often shared fond memories of summers spent on his grandparent’s dairy farm, where his trademark of stubbornness, tenacity, and legendary work ethic first began to flourish.
Before beginning his next chapter, Michael fathered two daughters, Shannon Avery and Adrienne Durish. In the early 1980s, his journey took him across the U.S. in search of adventure and odd jobs, eventually leading him to Oklahoma. It was there that he found his true love, Teresa Leaverton. Their story began in May 1983, and they proudly welcomed their son, Michael Jr., in 1985. The couple returned to Michigan in August 1990 for a quick trip to be forever joined in marriage.
Working as a professional semi-truck driver for most of his life, Michael navigated the country hauling double and triple trailers. Behind the wheel of a big rig, he possessed the patience and fortitude of a saint, demonstrating a level of expertise that only comes from a true love of the road and life’s journey.
When he wasn’t driving, Michael was a fervent sports fan. He had a soft spot for the underdog but remained fiercely loyal to his “Big Blue,” never missing a chance to cheer on the University of Michigan or the Detroit Lions. His other great passion was music. Michael’s soul was fed by live performances, and good tunes so he traveled to hundreds of concerts and festivals across the country with Teresa by his side.
Michael’s love for music served as the soundtrack to his life. It wasn’t uncommon for him to do yardwork or chores with his earbuds on, being plugged-in to a favorite melody. He loved all genres of music and had an extensive collection, one that he was quick to share with friends and family. Friends have said that they would often receive a text message from him, sharing a song, an inspiring quote, or a Bible verse just to brighten their day. Michael was always finding a new tune to share with others, as music was one of his greatest joys.
Beyond music, Michael was defined by his servant’s heart. He was the first-person people called when they were in need, and he truly thrived on "stealth" acts of kindness. He was especially fond of tending to the yards of those who couldn't do it themselves, making it his personal mission to deliver an unexpected blessing to someone every single day.
Above all, Michael was a man of profound faith and family. His heart of gold and radiant soul acted as a magnet, drawing people toward his warmth and his endless supply of stories and jokes. His devotion to his Savior was the essence of his character. He didn't just speak about his faith—he lived it through his unwavering support of others. Michael lived quietly, loved deeply, and left every place a little brighter than he found it.
Michael passed away after short term illness. Per his wishes, he was at home with the love of his life and their devoted rescue dog, Storm, by his side.
Michael is preceded in death by his parents Don & Tommie, his brother, Richard Farrell, his nephew, Brian Farrell, and his sister, Charlene King and niece Jennifer Grozdanich.
He is survived by his wife, Teresa, and son, Michael Jr. of OKC, OK; his daughters, Shannon Avery (Blake) of Washington; and Adrienne Durish (Kevin) of Arizona. Sister Karen Courtemanche (David) and their children Jeffrey, Christoper and Ashley all of TN. Brother Donald Rogers of CA. Bonus mom, Shirley Farrell and Mike (Judy) Frost, Peggy Bradon and Pat Holewinski all of MI. Niece Amelia Grozdanich of GA. And a large group of nieces and nephews and cousins all across the US.
He also is celebrated by several grandchildren: Bella Farrell, OK; Ryan Farrell, GA; Tayler Moore, MI; Jordan Pajor (Thomas), IN; Abigail Gray (Kanen), MI; Adam Avery, MI; and Madison Gehres, MI.
In the true nature of generosity of what Michael represented and how he lived and loved, he and Teresa affectionately and informally “adopted” several individuals as their own Godchildren: Brittany Frantz (Tony) and their girls, Somolia, Natalia, Oxyana, and Winter; Jenny Nguyen (Danny) and their children, King and Nhi. Dr. Darron Lamkin (Shante’) and their girls, Kayleah, Dilynn, and Skilynn.
It wasn’t uncommon to find Michael humming a favorite tune or recounting a story from the road, always with a twinkle of that farm-bred tenacity in his eye. He will be deeply missed by all who knew his steady hand and kind heart.
