Muriel “Granny” Gladstein of Oklahoma City passed away in her sleep on Monday morning at the age of 107. She was born in McAlester, OK, on April 29, 1912 and was married to her husband, Harris Gladstein, for 57 years until his death in 1990. Muriel led an active life in McAlester. She served as a volunteer director for the Red Cross during World War II and for decades volunteered at McAlester General hospital. Muriel loved to needlepoint and knit, and many of her family members became the lucky recipients of colorful blankets and throws. Muriel was a voracious reader throughout her life. Within twenty minutes of watching a Lord of the Rings movie, Muriel exclaimed, “No, turn it off! That’s not how I pictured it!” She loved to play cards and was known as a terrific bridge player. She could play gin for hours at a time. She loved her family, always excited to see them. Muriel is known for saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” which could help explain her long life. Her birth year of 1912 coincides with the invention of Oreo cookies, California raisins, Morton’s table salt, Hellmann’s mayonnaise and the Republic of China. She is 16 years older than the creation of sliced bread. She was quite a character and will be missed. Muriel is predeceased by one granddaughter, Cindy Dalton, of Columbus, Ohio. She is survived by daughters Joyce Gladstein Wolford of Columbus, Ohio and Linda Gladstein Blumenthal and husband Morris of Oklahoma City; six grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. Graveside services will be 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at Temple B’nai Israel Memorial Cemetery, 13313 N. Kelley Ave. The family expresses its deepest gratitude to the loving caregivers of Heaven House. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the Blumenthal Endowment Fund of Temple B’nai Israel or to an organization of your choice.
