

Nancy G. Cheek, 90, died on June 5, 2014, in Oklahoma City. She was a lifelong resident of Oklahoma and contributor to civic and Christian endeavors in Oklahoma City. Born on March 13, 1924, in Ardmore, OK, Nancy was an active leader in Ardmore High School, Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, where she attended for one year, and the University of Oklahoma, where she was President of Pi Beta Phi Sorority and graduated in 1944 with a major in Accounting. There, she met John D. Cheek, of Oklahoma City, to whom she was married for 64 wonderful years filled throughout with adventures and travel around the world.
Since 1946, Nancy had been an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she was ordained as both a Deacon and an Elder and served extensively in the Women of Westminster and Westminster Day School. She was also a group leader over many years in the Christian Women’s Club and Bible Study Fellowship.
Nancy provided extensive service to her husband’s and children’s activities and schools throughout her life. She held offices in the Oklahoma Bar Association Auxiliary, the Nichols Hills School Parent-Teacher Association, and at Casady School. She was deeply committed to children’s causes, serving in local chapters of the Camp Fire Girls and Cub Scouts and contributing time and talent as a Board Member of the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Young Women’s Christian Association, and the Special Program in Arts and Reading for Kids (SPARK), where she was a tutor. Her other major contributions to civic life in Oklahoma City included Board membership in the Hough Ear Institute and multiple officer roles in the P.E.O. sisterhood, Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club, and numerous garden, dance, bridge, book, and investment clubs.
Nancy is pre-deceased by her parents, Earl Q. and Lucile Roberts Gray; brother, Roger Q. Gray, of Ardmore; and husband, John D. Cheek, of Oklahoma City. She is survived by four children and their spouses: Judy and Richard Hays of Durham, NC; Earl and Louise Cheek of Oklahoma City; Cathy and Bruce Eskew of Colorado Springs, CO; and Tim and Sue Cheek of Oklahoma City. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and their spouses: Christopher and Yvonne Hays of San Juan Capistrano, CA; Sarah and Ken Coomer of Nashville; John and Rachel Cheek of Wichita, KS; Scott and Deanna Cheek of Austin, TX; Heather Cheek of Chicago, IL; William Eskew of Princeton, NJ; Matthew Eskew of Aspen, CO; Anna and Josh Gregory of Colorado Springs; Alison and Charlotte Cheek of Santa Barbara, CA; two great granddaughters, Madeleine Hays and June Cheek, and two great grandsons, Calvin Hays and Sky Coomer.
Services for Nancy will be on Tuesday June 10, 2014, at 10:00 am at Westminster Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in her honor to Westminster Presbyterian Church Foundation or Hough Ear Institute.
