Oleta Hatchett, age 97, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2013, at Bellevue Nursing Home, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She was born on July 29,1915, in Rocky, Oklahoma, to Johnnie and Ethyl (Roberts) :Haynes.
Oleta grew up in rural Washita County, near Cordell, Oklahoma. She graduated from Mountain View School in 1931. After high school she attended Southwestern State Teachers College in Weatherford, Oklahoma, where she received a baccalaureate degree.
After graduation, she secured a teaching position at a one-room schoolhouse in Camp Creek, Oklahoma. There she met Martin Luther Hatchett, her future husband. They were married on Valentine’s Day, 1936. Martin farmed and Oleta taught school in western Oklahoma and later in the Oklahoma panhandle until 1952, when the family moved to Oklahoma City.
Oleta first taught in the Putnam City schools. In 1956, she began teaching first grade at Luther Burbank Elementary School in the Oklahoma City school district. She taught there until her formal retirement in 1980. She continued teaching at Heritage Hall for 2 years and then did substitute teaching for several more.
She and Martin married in 1936 in Taloga, Oklahoma. They were happily married for 72 years. She was a member of Northwest Baptist Church. Her greatest joy was her fellowship with the Lord. The Haynes family was musically inclined and Oleta was no exception. She loved to sing and play the piano, which she did faithfully until an injury forced her from her home of 60 years.
Oleta was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie and Ethyl Haynes, brothers Dale and Emory Haynes, and two sisters, Lynn and Berniece. Martin died in 2008. Kay Wells, daughter, died in 2011.
She is survived by her two sons, John (Karen) of Bartlesville, and Tom of Oklahoma City, granddaughter Donna Wells of Oklahoma City, granddaughter Natalie Wells of Carthage Texas, and grandson David Wells of Oklahoma City. She is suarvived by her grandsons Mason Hatchett of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Philip Hatchett of Houston, Texas, and Robert Hatchett of Memphis, Tennessee. She is survived by eight great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 8701 NW Expressway, Oklahoma City, from noon to 8 PM, Thursday, April 25. The memorial service will be held at Chapel Hill Funeral Home at 2 PM Friday, April 26. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery.
