Pamela was born in Lackey, Virginia, to Edgar J. Opie and Alberta Morris.
Pamela devoted much of her time to praying for loved ones, strangers, and anyone who crossed her path whom she sensed could use a prayer. She enjoyed singing at her church and often continued singing once she returned home. She relished spending time with her family, especially her great-grandchildren, Ezekiel, Marcella, and Emelia. She enjoyed watching horror movies with her grandsons, Durell and Jamal, and laughing at the parts that were supposed to evoke fear. She taught life lessons even when she wasn’t trying to.
She will be remembered for being an empathetic ear to her friends and loved ones, for her beautiful, big-cheeked smile that lit up even the darkest rooms, and for being an example of strength and endurance, even when her body betrayed her.
Pamela is survived by her oldest grandson, Durell, and his family, and her youngest grandson, Jamal, and his family. She is also survived by her siblings; Earl Opie, Dale and wife, Elaine Opie, Belinda and husband, Ben Jefferson, Thaddeus and wife, Deborah Opie, Patricia and husband, Anthony Martin and Lorretta Grahm as well as sister-in-law, Tanya and husband Roy Swygert and brothers-in-law, Ronnie and wife, Mary Askew and James Askew.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Askew; her oldest son, Roger Askew Jr.; and her daughter, Veronica Askew-Carter.
