Ret. Col. Brian Allen Johnson of Oklahoma City, OK, known to his family as “Pawpa,”
died on January 19, 2021. He was 75.
Brian was born on August 26,1945 in Fort Sill, OK to Dorotha Johnson and Leo F.
Johnson. He graduated high school from Southeast High School and attended Oklahoma State
University. After leaving OSU, he went into the Army Reserves. From the Army Reserves, he
entered the Officer Candidate School. On April 15th, 1967, Brian married Charlotte Johnson.
They raised two daughters together, Kerri and Shelley.
Brian served in the United States Army Reserves from 1966 to 1994. During his time in
the Army, Brian earned the rank of Army Reserve Colonel. He served as the Commander of the
Headquarters and Command Group, 3D Brigade, 95th division in Oklahoma City, and
Commander of the 1st Battalion, 3D Brigade, 95th Division in Stillwater, Okla.. Brian was
awarded the Army Forces Reserve Medal, The Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal,
the Army Service Ribbon and the Meritorious Service Medal.
Brian was a life member of the National Rifle Association and a staunch supporter of the
Second Amendment. He served on the NRA board of directors from 1998 to 2001. He was active
in the friends of NRA Oklahoma City and Norman chapters.
Brian’s proudest accomplishment was his family. He was happiest at his cabin in Eufaula,
Okla. riding the lawnmower and yelling at the grandkids to, “Shut the dang door!” Brian loved to
watch Walker Texas Ranger or Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry. Brian would play the 50’s on 5
radio station entirely too loud and quiz you on your knowledge of the oldies. Brian was the
greatest example of giving 110 percent effort, 100 percent of the time. He was known for praying
a little extra at the dinner table and coming up with a nickname or jingle for all of his kids and
grandkids.
Brian bled orange, and was a proud member of the Oklahoma State Cowboy Family.
Every Saturday you could find him in Boone Pickens Stadium, cheering on cowboy football and
more importantly, rooting against that “other school” up North. Mike Gundy, if you’re reading
this, Brian didn’t really mean it when he yelled, “Fire Gundy!” at Bedlam a few years back.
Brian was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Dorotha Johnson. He is survived by
his wife Charlotte; his two brothers Roger and Leo Johnson; his two daughters and their
husbands, Kerri and Mike Seiler and Shelley and Tony Tyler. He is also survived by his seven
grandchildren; Nick Tyler, Kaitlyn Seiler, Jakob Seiler, Zack Tyler, Jackson Seiler, Elijah Tyler,
and Emma Tyler.
Services for Brian Johnson will be held at 11AM on Monday, January 25, 2021 at St. James Catholic Church in OKC. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 24th from 12-6pm with the family greeting friends at the funeral home from 4-6pm.
