Roger Willmon Spurlock was born to Frances & Joe Spurlock, April 29, 1953 at the Army Base at El Paso, TX. Roger went to be with the Lord on Friday, December 2, 2016 at his home peacefully. Roger was baptized at Crestwood Baptist Church, OKC. He grew up in Oklahoma and attended Ridgeview Elementary and Shawnee Schools. He then moved to Oakdale Long Island in his sophomore year to Connecticut High School, graduating in June of 1972. He attended Idaho State on a Football Scholarship and started as a freshman. Roger enjoyed playing sports including football, basketball and track. Roger also received many awards and set many new school records including: League III High jump Champ 5’10” (1970), All League track new school record for High Jump (1971), Track Shot Put (1972) and Outstanding 11th Grade Football player for the 1970 Football Season. Roger married his High School sweetheart, Kathleen Kotoun on June 15, 1975. He was blessed with a Son, Joshua, and Daughter, Daddy’s Girl, Heather. PaPas’s four grandchildren are Julian, James, Kyra and Elijah. He coached Joshua, Heather and their classmates in Football, Basketball, Track and Soccer at St Eugene Catholic School and Bishop McGuinness High School. He loved to Coach and truly brought out the best in each and every child. He wanted them to experience Team work and that they could do anything on or off the field/court as well as share the love of the game that he too felt. Roger was a Welder and Printer by trade and worked at many Mom & Pop Shops in OKC through the years. Later in life he worked at Home Depot on N.W. Expressway where he enjoyed helping his customers in the Lawn and Garden Center. While he was there he made many new friends and his Co-Workers became family. Roger never knew the word “NO”, he was the Honey-Do of his neighborhood block quick to always help Elva, Jeanie, Linda, Michelle and kids as well as his other Honey-Do Janie B and her 3 kids of which he was Godfather to. Roger enjoyed a Good Meal; his favorite restaurant was Chelino’s on North May Avenue, all of the waiters and waitresses became his Chelino’s family. Roger had many hobbies which included Season tickets to the NBA Hornets, OKC Thunder, watching his favorite NFL team the 49’ers, listening to music, fishing, reading his National Geographic Books, Barbecuing, Karaoke singing with his daughter Heather and friends, watching a good movie, mowing his lawn, gardening and working on Cars. He also enjoyed just sitting on his front porch and playing his Guitar. He shared his love of fishing by teaching his kids, Grandkids and any friends they brought along how to fish. Roger had a Love for his four legged friends, Wimpey, Rocky and Adrianne. Roger loved Life and lived by the motto “Faith, Family, and Friends”. Roger enjoyed traveling and going back to his High School Reunions, seeing his old classmates and catching up by sharing stories and pictures. The best part of seeing his friends was when he got to be around his “Old Buds”, John, Ray, Vinny and others from the Class of ‘72 Connecticut High School. He was named Papa by his Grandson, Julian. The time went fast watching new born grandbabies turn into Adults but PaPa loved his Grandkids more than anything and enjoyed watching them grow up. He attended their school activities, birthday parties, dance recitals, musical concerts and sporting events Dad/PaPa was their biggest fan and always had Words of Wisdom for them. He found a new home and Family in Pella Iowa, “Go Pella Dutch!”, State Champs for 3 years: 2014, 2015, and 2016. Julian played for Pella in 2015 and 2016. Roger adored celebrating all of the holidays throughout the year. He would go shopping to find the Biggest Roll of Black cats for the 4th of July and loved putting on a fireworks show for family and friends. Roger took pleasure in grilling; whether it was in the heat of the summer or the cold of the winter, he wanted to be sure everyone was able to enjoy his ribs year round. He also enjoyed making holiday foods such as; cooking the turkey, stuffing and making giblet gravy. Carving pumpkins was something that he reveled in, along with putting Christmas lights on the roof of the house. Dad/PaPa loved every minute of Christmas and was delighted to dress up as “Santa” for the kids and Grandkids each year. Roger enjoyed life to the “Fullest”. Sitting outside on his porch playing his guitar for his wife, kids, and grandkids was one of his favorite past times. All the while he would be laughing and telling jokes. Roger had eyes of blue, along with a smile and a kind word for everyone. He gave his all in anything he would do. He was the kindest and bravest man we knew. Roger was a Son, Brother, Husband, Dad, PaPa, Uncle and Friend to all. We can tell you that we loved him as he loved us. We will Miss Him and we Will Meet Again. Roger was preceded in Death by his Dad; Joe, Grandparents; Daddy Joe, Dobbie, Pappaw & Nannaw, Mom and Pop Kotoun (in laws). Roger memories are treasured by his Mom Frances, Wife Kathy, Son Joshua and his Daughter Heather. Along with PaPas Grandchildren; Julian, James, Kyra and Elijah. I had the privilege of working with Roger for a few years and even during difficult times he always had a calm, never rattled disposition. His humor will be missed dearly. I remember hearing all the wonderful stories of his family, especially how he enjoyed his grandkids. I will always remember him as a top notch pressman and a friend. My prayers go out to the family.

Kathy, I came to work at rehab and saw the note about Roger. I was sad when I read it, for you and your children. You and I have known each other for years, and sometimes have gone long periods not seeing each other. But please know though, that even in those times of I have considered you a good friend. My heart hurts for you. Warmest respects, a fellow New Yorker.
