On the afternoon of August 20, 2016, Ruth R. Adams passed from this life in Oklahoma City. She was born in Newton, MS, on June 20, 1925, the youngest child of George Jason Sikes and Ota Ethel Lewis. She graduated from Newton High School and Baptist College of Nursing in Memphis, TN. In 1948, Ruth married Albin Adams in Holdenville, OK. They had two children, Anita and John, and lived in Long Beach, MS, for 18 years before moving to Del City in 1968.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband, son, three siblings: Sibyl Norman McDonald, Havus Sikes and Onyx Sikes and niece, Donna Sikes. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, AJ, grandchildren Tamara and Mark, sisters-in-law, Kathleen Powell, Oklahoma City, and Lola Atkins, Columbus, MS, and 15 nieces and nephews. Nursing was Ruth’s passion. She worked at hospitals in Gulfport, MS, and Alexandria, LA, before retiring as a charge nurse with 19 years’ service at Bone and Joint Hospital in Oklahoma City. After retirement, she missed the hospital environment and volunteered several years at Bone and Joint.
Ruth loved the Lord and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Midwest City. She enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, her flowers and cats. Working word search puzzles was something she did in her spare time and she had an incredible ability to solve Wheel of Fortune puzzles with only a few letters on the board. Special thanks to Jerome Mathias, M.D., and his nurse, Tracy Swift, for their many years of friendship and care, and to the staff of OU Medical Center for their care during Ruth’s last days. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Oklahoma Heart Hospital Research Foundation, 4200 W. Memorial Rd., Ste. 510, Oklahoma City, OK 73120 or online at https://www.okheart.com. Viewing will be Wednesday evening August 24, from 4pm–8pm at Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home, 8805 NE 23rd St., Oklahoma City, OK 73141.
