Paul was born on October 14, 1942, in Ringling, Oklahoma to Paul B. Hammons and Emma Ruth Newcomb Hammons. Growing up in Waurika, Paul showed early competitiveness, intelligence, and humor that stayed with him throughout his life. His competitive nature was showcased on various sports fields, as he was the quarterback on the football team, the point guard in basketball, and ran the 440-yard dash—a race he complained about for the rest of his life.
He was a proud graduate of the University of Oklahoma earning both his undergraduate degree and his Juris Doctorate before being commissioned into the United States Navy on December 31, 1968. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Judge Advocate (JAG) officer during the Vietnam War, a role he spoke of with deep pride. His first tour of duty was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, followed by a second tour at the Naval Justice School in Newport, Rhode Island, where he served as an instructor and met his wife and lifelong partner, Barbara.
Following his military service, Paul and Barbara returned to Oklahoma where they began a life centered on family. Together they raised five beautiful children, while he practiced law as a long-time partner at the Andrews Davis Law Firm. After a successful career working in the oil and gas industry, Paul devoted much of his later career to representing and advising family, friends, neighbors, and members of the community with care and integrity.
Of all his accomplishments, none mattered more to Paul than his role as a husband, father, and grandfather. He shared his life with his beloved wife Barbara, and was the proud father of Douglas (Peggy) Hammons, David (Amy) Hammons, Elizabeth Hammons (Nima) Nabavi, Brian (Fawn) Hammons, and Brett (Christie) Hammons. He was a devoted grandfather to Kelsea Hammons, Abigail (Skyler) Rodriguez, Patrick (Abigail) Hammons, Alexander Nabavi, Nicholas Nabavi, Nathan Nabavi, Brian Nabavi, Katherine Nabavi, August Hammons, Nora Hammons, and Jack Hammons.
Paul delighted in his grandchildren, teasing them endlessly, playing games, laughing often, and lighting up whenever they were near. He made a point of being present and rarely missed a sporting event, school play, or important milestone.
When Paul wasn’t enjoying his family, you could find him doing one of the things he loved most. Most days you could find him on the golf course. He loved golf and was very good at it; he knew it – so did everyone else. He loved gardening, especially his tomatoes, which were, without question, the best. He read constantly, loved history, and had a curious mind.
To know Paul was to laugh. He was one of the funniest people his family knew, always ready with a joke, a quick remark, or a well-timed story. His humor came easily, and his bright blue eyes would light up when he laughed - often after he had made someone else laugh first.
Paul loved and hated OU football in equal measure and never missed a chance to comment on it. He enjoyed watching old television shows, especially The Lawrence Welk Show and old Westerns, and found comfort in listening to old hymns that reflected his quiet faith and appreciation for tradition.
He was strong, steady, and deeply loving. Above all else, he loved his family. That love showed in his presence, his teasing, his stories, his laughter, and the way he made people feel included.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Dixie Fern Montgomery and Kay Brezina.
Paul Hammons leaves behind a family who adored him, learned from him, laughed endlessly with him, and will miss him more than words can say. His stories, his laughter, and his love will live on in each of them.
