

Stanley Reid McCampbell was born December 16, 1925 in Nashville Tennessee to Basil Davis McCampbell and Louise McCall McCampbell. He died September 23, 2011 following a long illness. He attended public schools in Oklahoma City and was a graduate of Classen High School. In World War II he served in the Navy aboard the USS Pocono. He received a BA Degree, cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1949 and an MD degree in 1953 both from Vanderbilt University. He served as an intern and resident at the Cornell Medical Section of Bellevue Hospital, New York and was a Fellow in Cardiology at New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center. He was also a Fellow in Cardiology at the University of London England. He began the private practice of cardiology in Oklahoma City in 1957, and in 1964 also became the Medical Director of Globe Life Insurance Co. He was also the owner and operator of Wild Horse Ranches.
Dr. McCampbell served as President of many organizations including: Skull and Bones Medical honorary, American Medical Tennis Society, Oklahoma County Medical Society, Oklahoma State Medical Association, Oklahoma City Association of Phi Beta Kappa, International Congress on Psychosomatic and Preventive Medicine, and Oklahoma City Academy of Medicine. In 1971 he founded and served as the first President of the World Medical Tennis Society, a position he held until 1983. He was very proud of this organization which used recreational tennis as an entrée to international physician interaction, including China, Japan, Europe, the Middle East and the Soviet Union, and he maintained friendships with doctors from around the world.
In addition, Dr. McCampbell served on the Board of Directors of Community Council and Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce. He was elected Fellow, Royal Society for Health, London, England, and was awarded Phi Beta Kappa of the Year in 1981. He served on the Scientific Committee, La Mission Medicale Belge Paris-Dakar, and was named to Who’s Who in Frontier Science and Technology. In 1992 he received the Del Bono award for Cultural and Humanitarian Achievement in San Remo Italy. He served as a Deacon at Westminster Presbyterian Church and was a member of Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club.
Among his greatest joys was spending time with his family at the farm. In addition to raising horses he was devoted to his world class vegetable garden. All of his children learned to put in fence posts, roof the farm house, and pick okra. In later years he transferred his love of gardening to his backyard and was proud to show it off at the first Nichols Hills Garden Tour.
Dr. McCampbell is preceded in death by his parents, and brothers B.D. McCampbell Jr. and James McCampbell. He is survived by his wife Joan Garner McCampbell, their four children and spouses, Sody and Robert Clements, Robert and Donna McCampbell, Jim McCampbell, and Kelly and Ragon Gentry, and 6 grandchildren: Robert and William Clements, Ann and Ben McCampbell, Sody and Garner Gentry.
Memorial service will be held Monday, Sept. 26 at 2pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4400 N. Shartel, Oklahoma City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Nichols Hills Parks Inc, 6407 Avondale, Nichols Hills, OK 73116 .
