Steve Nutt, 83, passed away on January 29, 2024, in Oklahoma City. He was born in California in 1940 to Douglas and Eleneta Nutt. Steve attended Dartmouth College before graduating from Stanford University in 1962 with a bachelor’s in political science. He married Anne Bailey Nutt in September 1962 (divorced in 1981). Steve and Anne had two children together (Libby and Katie) and four grandchildren (Megan, Jake, Bennett, and Brianna).
Steve joined the Navy in 1962, becoming an officer (Ensign) and serving on the USS Valcour in the Persian Gulf and Middle East. He then earned his JD degree at Stanford Law School. Steve first worked in corporate law at Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York and then moved back to California (where he worked at Rutan & Tucker in Newport Beach and then Skadden Arps and eventually Mellon US Leasing in San Francisco).
In November 2005, he married Melissa Mitchell in Santa Barbara, California. He moved to Oklahoma to be with Melissa and her family. Steve and Melissa loved spending time with Melissa’s children (David, Kathy, and Jessica) and their children (Noah, Katy, Ava, Michael, and Johnnie Mae).
Steve will always be remembered for his wry and witty humor. He was also an organized soul who tended to be a bit of a packrat. He loved his dogs, his Mustang, reading, and playing tennis. He also loved the 49ers. (He may have waited to pass until he was sure his beloved 9ers would be in the 2024 Super Bowl.) He also created family memories through photography. When his daughters were little, he took many, many photos. They used to joke that the clicking sound of an old camera was the soundtrack of their childhood. He loved deeply and had a strong sense of faith. He will be greatly missed, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
Steve is survived by his wife Melissa; his daughters Libby (Scot) and Katie (Adrian); his stepchildren David, Kathy (Chris), and Jessica; and his grandchildren.
