For her children, that meant countless basketball games, concerts and art shows. For her siblings and friends, it meant a helping hand, a thoughtful gesture or something beautiful she'd made just for them.
It was simply Susan's way. She loved her family, treasured her friendships and gave generously of her time and talents, usually with a laugh and always with impeccable style.
Susan died peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, surrounded by her family.
Born in Prague, Oklahoma, Susan graduated from John Marshall High School in Oklahoma City and graduated from the University of Oklahoma, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority.
A talented seamstress with an eye for detail, Susan made everything from curtains and bedspreads to Halloween costumes. She worked with interior decorators who valued her craftsmanship. Her handiwork can still be found throughout her siblings' homes, each piece a reminder of the love and care she put into making it.
She took enormous pride in their children, Carter and Stuart, and their creative talents. She spent countless hours cheering on Stuart at basketball games and later attending his art shows. She shared Carter's love of music, attending concerts together and even traveling to London to see her daughter perform. Above all, she taught her children the importance of kindness, hard work and treating others well. She especially loved being Mimi to her granddaughter, Olivia.
Susan had a quick wit and a knack for slipping humor into just about any conversation. Her family affectionately called her memorable one-liners “Susanisms.” She once joked to her sister Sarah, “You're the smart one, and I'm good for laughs.” She loved card games, puzzles and a good family story, even one everyone had heard 27 times before.
Her faith was reflected in the way she cared for others. A member of Britton Christian Church, Susan volunteered with Study Buddies and belonged to a close-knit prayer group. She also helped care for her father following her mother's death.
Susan lived with Alzheimer's disease in the last few years.
She is survived by her daughter, Carter Sampson, and Carter's partner, Erik Oftedahl; son, Stuart Sampson, and his wife, Breann; granddaughter, Olivia Sampson; sister, Sarah Askew, and her husband, Jimmy; brothers, Brad Kemp and his wife, Susie, and Taylor Kemp and his wife, Joni; and many nieces and nephews.
A private burial will precede a memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, at Britton Christian Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Britton Christian Church.
