Public visitation will be held at Advantage Funeral Service on Monday, the 19th, from 12pm-8pm with the family greeting friends in the evening.
Valeria Virginia Hutcherson was born on October 24, 1921 in Kentucky to William and Golda (Spradlin) Hutcherson. She was raised in the St. Louis, MO area. Following high school, Larry met a young soldier, James Mock, who would soon ship out to Puerto Rico during the war. They hit it off and married in October of 1943 after a courtship of 3 weeks. Larry attended a local beauty school and soon relocated to Oklahoma where she worked in Mock’s Beauty Shop for nearly three years while awaiting James’ return from the war.
After leaving Mock’s Beauty Shop, she enjoyed time at home raising their 4 children. In 1974, James and Larry adopted Dawn Coleman and her family into theirs. Larry was a talented seamstress who enjoyed making clothing for her children and crocheting. She was a wonderful cook who made legendary chicken and noodles and cherry pie. She loved teaching her recipes to others. Those who know Larry know that her two priorities were her faith and her family. She was devoted follower of Christ. She enjoyed spending the last six decades reading through the entire Bible each year. She would regularly open her home to visiting missionaries or to the often forgotten and struggling members of her community. She was welcoming and hospitable regardless of someone’s social status, skin color, or differing beliefs. She was a long time member of Kentucky Avenue Baptist Church where she used her gifts and love for people to connect with children and young adults. She assisted in organizing Vacation Bible School and other children’s ministries.
She later joined Sunnyside Baptist Church and made many wonderful friends. Larry had a heart for missions and volunteered at Mission Mailbag, a former local missionary organization who made a difference in Nigeria and many other countries. She truly had a servant’s heart and went out of the way to show Christ’s love to other in real and tangible ways. Larry Mock was generous and compassionate woman. She was a loving mother, a dedicated wife, a proud grandma, and a loyal friend who will truly be missed by each person who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of almost 53 year James Mock; daughter Karolyn Holden; grandson Andrew Brooks; a great grandson Russell Hodgen; and two sisters Ruby Orf and Vivian Sprung. She is survived by her 4 children; Jimmy Mock and wife Cathy, Patty Baker and husband Wes, Cyndy Brooks and husband Randy, and Dawn Coleman; 14 grandchildren: Julie, Lori, Sonia, Aaron, Emily, Lauren, Roby, Jennifer, Valerie, Ryan, Brandon, Shannon, Collette and Joni; 20 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren with another on the way. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other beloved family members and friends.
