Velma Irene Blessington was born to Harold and Berenice Mayer in Sabetha, Kansas, on January 17, 1942. She was the youngest of four girls (sisters- Jean, Donna, and Virginia) and raised with strong family values that helped foster the family she would raise as an adult. She was a proud Enid Plainsmen and a graduate of the Class of 1960. After graduation, she went on to Nurse’s Training in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she graduated as a registered nurse.
In 1964, she met her future husband at a wedding where they were both part of the same wedding party. They eventually married on October 25, 1969, in Our Lady of Fatima in Nicoma Park, Oklahoma. After numerous moves, they finally landed in Jones, Oklahoma, in 1980, where they would raise their two boys.
Velma dedicated her professional life to helping others, especially children, as a nurse in various capacities at the Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City. She touched many lives at a time when hope was thin, but she always had a caring heart for every child she treated. She finished her nursing career as a school nurse who could spot headlice from 10 feet away. She worked for Mid/Del Pubic Schools but retired from Edmond Public Schools in 2004.
Velma had a passion for fishing, trips to Eufula, spending time with friends, going to the casino, and watching sporting events (especially if it involved a grandchild) in person or on television. Her biggest passion was her family. She was the greatest mom and granny that any kid would have been lucky to have. Her greatest thrill was gathering the entire family for Sunday homemade dinners with very few exceptions. She always enjoyed having each family member, for their birthday, pick their meal and dessert. She loved her family without exception. Being a granny to her four grandchildren was her favorite pastime.
Velma is preceded in death by her mother and father, sisters- Jean Edmundson, Donna Pritchett, and Virginia Pritchett, and grandson Charlie Blessington. She is survived by her husband Mike Blessington of Midwest City, sons Chris Blessington of Jones, Paul & Renee Blessington of Choctaw, grandchildren Blake Blessington & Grant Smith of OKC, Jackson & Nicole Blessington of San Antonio, TX, Gus Blessington of Jones, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at St. Teresa of Avila in Harrah, Oklahoma, on Monday, June 15th at 11 am. A rosary service will be at 10:30 am. The family would like to personally thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and wonderful support they have provided over the past few months. Your thoughts and words of support have meant so much to the family.
Matthew 25:21 – "Well done, good and faithful servant... Enter into the joy of your lord."
