Virginia Lee McCubbin, 88, of Oklahoma City, OK passed away peacefully while surrounded by her three children on Wednesday, December 16, 2020, from complications due to COVID-19. She was born in Oklahoma City, OK on January 30, 1932, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Pollard of Oklahoma City. Virginia grew up in Oklahoma City where she attended Horace Mann elementary school and Classen High School. She was also an accomplished equestrian having grown up riding horses on her father’s farm in Canadian County. Virginia loved showing horses too, including her American Saddlebred horse Frisky and one of the loves of her life, her Welsh and Shetland pony Flicka.
Virginia attended Gulf Park School for Women in Gulfport, Mississippi in 1948 where she was a member of Sigma Psi Iota. After one year, she returned to Oklahoma City and graduated from Classen High School in 1949. She then attended the University of Oklahoma where she became a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. While at OU in the early 1950s, Virginia met Lloyd W. (Bill) Roberts and later married him in 1953. Virginia and Bill raised their three children together in the Belle Isle neighborhood in Oklahoma City where they lived until 1978.
Virginia later remarried Robert E. McCubbin of Oklahoma City in July 1990. Virginia and Bob had four wonderful years together traveling, gardening and feeding their “backyard critters” before Bob’s untimely passing in September 1994. From that time on, Virginia enjoyed taking the road less traveled and being with family and friends. More than anything, Virginia loved being with her three children and grandchildren. She was always on call and loved to help out with everything from picking up grandkids to being the family’s interior decorator. Not many know, but Virginia had an eye for just how a room should look and it was her specialty. It was not unusual to come home on occasion only to find the pictures on the wall or the furniture moved to just the right arrangement. We would all lovingly joke about how things always seemed to look better after Mom had put her eye to the arrangement.
As an Oklahoma City native, Virginia had many friends and over the years had been actively involved in several women’s organizations including Chapter E of PEO, the La Junta Book Club and Pen and Quill. She was also a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church where she and a close group of friends affectionately known as “the three B’s and a V” attended Sunday school and served in the Stephen ministry together. Virginia enjoyed traveling, having traveled across parts of Europe, the lower 48 states, Alaska and British Columbia. But her favorite trips were those with her kids and grandkids to Arkansas, Missouri, Texas and Colorado.
Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, James Roston (JR) and Laura (Massie) Pollard, as well as her late husband Robert E. (Bob) McCubbin. She is survived by her three children: her oldest son Jim Roberts, his wife Shelley and their son Taylor of Oklahoma City; her son Jon Roberts, his wife Rebecca of Edmond, OK, and Jon’s sons David and Justin Roberts; and her daughter Laura Fentem and her husband Rick. Laura has two grown girls, Emily Aust of Edmond, OK and Caitlin Aust of Oklahoma City. Virginia also leaves behind two great grandchildren, Trystan and Addison Roberts.
Visitation will be held from 8 am to 8 pm, Saturday, December 19, 2020 at Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper, 6600 Broadway Extension, Oklahoma City, OK 73116.
In the interest of public health and safety due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the family will hold a private memorial service through Hahn Cook/Street & Draper in Oklahoma City.
