Zola Mae Zinn

April 17, 1926March 20, 2020

Zola Mae Zinn, 93, went to her heavenly home on Friday, March 20, 2020 in Oklahoma City, OK. Zola was born on April 17, 1926 to Thomas and Ola Mae Newnam in Sparks, OK.

Zola graduated from Davenport HIgh School in 1943 and attended Oklahoma Baptist University. She worked as a bookkeeper for many years but found her true calling in serving others as the financial secretary at Portland Avenue Baptist Church. She was a strong follower of Christ and was an active member of Portland Avenue from 1950 until her illness.

Through her strong faith, many would describe Zola as a Christian servant with a Christian legacy that is truly everlasting. She was a great, generous friend to all, sweet to everyone she met, and always an “actions speak louder than words” type of woman.

Zola always found time to spoil her grandchildren. Many fond memories were made as she spent quality time with all three, making each feel special.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Van Alvis Zinn; her father, Thomas Bert Newnam; her mother, Ola Mae Newnam; her brothers, Tom Newnam and Carl Newnam; and her sisters Hazel Baker and Evelyn Fowler.

Zola is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Dawn Grassmann and husband Steven Grassmann; her three grandchildren, Savanna Lee Grassmann, Ciarra Dawn Grassmann, and Shianne Mae Grassmann; and her sister, Margie Fowler; along with many nieces and nephews.

A family graveside service was held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will be livestreamed on Facebook from Portland Avenue Baptist Church on Saturday, March 28, 2020 at 2:00 p.m.

I met Zola in 1963 when I was 17 years old. My daddy, Dr. Dane was pastor to Van & Zola. The whole church rejoiced when Cindy was born! "The Zinns" were blessings to everyone they ministered to and were wonderful friends to my parents. The friendship with Zola continued until their passing. Wonderful memories of this very special, very faithful family. My love to you and your family, Cindy. Linda Dane Page

For the last year I have had the pleasure of getting to know Zola as an ombudsman to her facility! When I saw her she would always have a smile on her face that would brighten my day! She will be missed!

Zola was a second mother to me. I will forever be grateful to Van and Zola for accepting me as a daughter. Cindy, your mom was such a blessing in my life. She was one of the most caring, loving and giving people I know. She had a gift of making others feel special and loved. Thank you for sharing her with me and allowing me to be a part of your family.

Holding you and your family close in my thoughts and prayers. Praying for peace and comfort during this difficult time.

Love you,
Belinda Rogers
