Bernadette “Bernie” Jeanne Blume, 92, of Olathe, Kansas passed away surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, November 8, 2022. She will forever be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother (Great Munga), sister, aunt and caring friend to everyone she knew.
Bernadette was born on September 3, 1930 in Louisburg, Kansas to Bernard John and Clara Cecile (Leitner) Rosner. Tragically, Bernard drowned months before Bernadette’s birth. Bernie, as she was called, had many fond memories growing up with her sister, Kathryn (Kate), and spending time with her grandparents and many aunts and uncles in Louisburg. Later, she attended and proudly graduated from Paola High School. At any mention of PHS, Bernie would burst into a rousing rendition of the Paola High fight song.
Bernie continued her education at St. Margaret’s Hospital School of Nursing and graduated as a registered nurse in 1951. She started her career in Neodesha, Ks. After one year, she moved to Olathe and joined the private practices of many long-time Olathe physicians including, Drs. Delphia, Pincomb, and Seaman. Bernie also worked at the Gardner Medical Center before finishing her career with Women’s Care. She worked as a registered nurse for 40 years before retiring in 2000.
As a teenager, Bernie met the love of her life, Glenn Blume. They were married on October 11, 1952 and made their home in Olathe, Ks. Together, they raised their three children, Doug, Glenda and Phil.
Bernadette was a long time member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church. She loved to volunteer at the Pavilion for Olathe Medical Center. She participated for 15 years in the Seniors Serving Schools program for the Olathe School District; twelve of those years were spent volunteering in her granddaughter’s classroom at Woodland Elementary School. She loved the ocean, going out to lunch with her friends and family (especially at Old 56 Family Restaurant), trips to the casinos and playing bingo. She loved spending time with her family. Nothing gave her more pleasure in life than attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. She was a super fan as she watched countless soccer, volleyball and cross-country events. She was even able to cheer on her great grandson, Connor in soccer. She will be sadly missed.
Her parents; loving husband of 48 years, Glenn Blume; son, Doug Blume; sister, Kate Williams and brother-in-law, Bob Williams proceed Bernadette in death. She is survived by her two children, Glenda Aguilar and her husband Patrick of Lenexa, Kansas and Phil Blume and his wife Dani of Topeka, Kansas.
