Age 70 | Olathe, Kansas
Carol Letitia Holtgraves, 70, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away on October 6, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of fierce love, unwavering loyalty, sharp wit, and a spirit that was truly larger than life.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Carol was a force to be reckoned with. Fiercely proud of her Scottish heritage, she carried her roots wherever life took her. She lived unapologetically on her own terms, never afraid to speak her mind, stand her ground, or remind her sons that "The best part of you will always be Scottish."
With Mom, you never had to wonder where you stood. She said what she meant, meant what she said, and always kept her word. Her quick wit, sharp humor, and wonderfully strong personality made her unforgettable.
She took tremendous pride in her career in mortgage banking. Intelligent, driven, and remarkably capable, she approached every challenge with determination and an unwavering commitment to doing things well. Give her a task, and you could consider it done—and done right. She took pride in her accomplishments, her work ethic, and the knowledge that there was little she couldn't achieve once she set her mind to it.
It was through her work in mortgage banking that she met Dad, the man who would become her husband and partner of 42 years. Where Mom was a force of nature, Dad was her calm in the center of the storm. He was her lighthouse, the steady light that guided her safely back to port whenever life's waters grew rough. Their marriage was filled with love, laughter, good-natured teasing, and the occasional bickering that comes with sharing a lifetime. Dad knew her fierce independence, her stubborn streak, and the tender heart beneath it all. He never needed to quiet her storm; he simply stood steady beside her through it.
Beneath that formidable Scottish spirit was a heart that loved fiercely and gave generously. If there was something you wanted but couldn't quite afford, Mom's response was often a simple, "I'll half it with you." It was her way of saying that if something mattered to you, it mattered to her, too.
As a mother, her love was steadfast and protective. Every year, without fail, she called her sons on their birthdays at the exact time they were born. No matter how many years passed, she never forgot those precious moments when they entered her world.
As a grandmother, she delighted in spoiling her four beloved grandchildren with her famous "Treat Me Days," creating special memories filled with laughter, love, and a little indulgence.
She found joy in life's simple pleasures: tending to her garden, spending time with her beloved dogs, working through a good puzzle, and enjoying a wee shopping spree whenever the mood struck.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 42 years, James Holtgraves; her sons, Robert Holtgraves (Angela) and Andrew Holtgraves (Amanda); her cherished grandchildren, Robert Jr. (RJ), Zoey, Ethan, and Emilia; and her siblings, Robert (Kim), Mary (Alan), and David (Kim).
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Christine, and her sister, Anne.
Mom leaves behind a family who will forever carry her Scottish pride, her fierce determination, her laughter, and the lessons she taught us simply by being herself. There will be birthdays when we remember a phone call that always came at exactly the right moment, and times when we can almost hear her say, "I'll half it with you."
Mom was small in stature, mighty in spirit, and always the tallest person in the room. She lived her life her way, loved her people fiercely, and left a mark that time will never erase.
And while we must now learn to live without hearing her voice, we will never forget the familiar greeting that could make any ordinary moment a little brighter.
Because if there's one thing you could always count on when you walked through the door, it was Mom greeting you with a cheerful, unmistakable, "HiYa!"
Mom, you will be missed. It's comforting to imagine that one day, when we meet again, you'll say exactly that.
