Darrel was born on July 29, 1933, in Kansas City, KS to Homer E. and Nellie Viola (Powell) Irvin.
He grew up in the Overland Park/Stanley area where he lived most of his childhood. He attended a one room schoolhouse near his home until the 8th grade. Growing up Darrel worked alongside his dad Homer and brothers, Sonny and Keith, and other family members as a brick mason. He married Patricia A. Lewis in 1953 and joined the Army that same year. He served from 1953-1955 at Ft. Hood, TX during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1955 and continued his service for another 6 years as a reservist. He moved back to Kansas where he lived most of his life. He started his own masonry company after his service in the Army and retired from the business at the age of 83.
Darrel and Patricia together raised 5 children: Patty K (Radebaugh) Irvin, Karen Y. (Stuteville) Irvin, Darrel (aka Dan) D. Irvin, Darren D. Irvin, Dane I. Irvin. Darrel and Patricia were married for approximately 30 years. He married Betty A. (Betterson) Woltkamp in 1986. They lived in Belton, MO for 11 years and then moved to Louisburg, KS in 1997. After Betty’s death on February 2, 2008, he later sold their beloved home in Louisburg, KS in August of 2012 and moved to Linn Valley, KS and lived there for the past 9 years.
He enjoyed spending his time at his home in Linn Valley mowing other people's lots, going to Harvesters getting food to share with others, feeding the birds, deer, racoons and all the other wildlife and stray cats in the area that would come to his home. He especially enjoyed taking his dogs Snuckles and Chooch to the LaCygne Power and Light Lake daily until both dogs passed away. He liked to watch Wheel of Fortune and Family Guy and sometimes Tom and Jerry to pass the time in the evenings. Oh, and the weather, always the weather! He didn’t like the cold and couldn’t wait for spring and warmer weather so he could get out and drive and mow. He enjoyed taking long rides and enjoying the scenery along the way. He loved flowers and plants, which is evident with all the plants inside his home that he would bring inside in the winter months. He also enjoyed watching his goldfish swimming in the huge fish tank in his living room and having his cat Thomas laying by his side as he watched TV and ate ice cream.
He is preceded in death by his wife Betty A. Irvin, parents Homer E Irvin and Nellie V Irvin, siblings Susan (Tiss), Delores (Tine), Wanda, Sonny, and Keith, daughter-in-law Lynda A. Irvin, and granddaughter Jessica Lopez. He is survived by his ex-wife Patricia A. Irvin; children Patty (Jay) Radebaugh, Karen Stuteville, Dan, Darren, and Dane Irvin; grandchildren Rose Thagard, Bryan Hawkins, Austin Radebaugh, Jennifer Brown, Amanda Fletcher, Emily Lane, Laura Bullock, Heather, Amber, Lee, Ryan, Dustin, Justin Irvin, 37 great grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
