Dennis was born on September 14, 1946, in Holden, Missouri, to George W. Bollin and Geraldine Fern Thompson Lester. He was raised by George W. and Mary Bollin and graduated from Ruskin Heights High School in Missouri in 1964.
Those who knew Dennis will remember him as hardworking, humorous, and just the right amount of ornery. He was also patient, brave, kind-hearted, and wise - qualities that guided him throughout his life and work.
Dennis proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1965 to 1968, stationed at Nike Air Base. During his service, he earned recognition as a Sharpshooter (rifle) and Marksman (missile).
After his military service, Dennis began his civilian career at Hallmark Cards working as a Printing Press Operator for 21 years. Dennis then dedicated over 40 years to protecting his community as a firefighter. He volunteered for 20 years with the Spring Hill Fire Department and spent another 20 years in full-time service with the Johnson County District 1 Fire Department at New Century Airport, where he retired as a shift captain. In addition, Dennis was a Mobile Fire Safety Trainer for The University of Kansas for approximately 5 years. He ended his career with 10 years with the Spring Hill Coop, working up to his cancer diagnosis. Throughout his life, he also assisted his son and father-in-law in farming operations.
On June 16, 1968, Dennis married the love of his life, Carol Hanser, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. They were blessed with a son, Scott (Jennifer) Bollin, and a granddaughter, Raylyn Bollin, along with her fiancé, Brendon Smith.
Dennis is also survived by his siblings John Rafferty of Topeka, Kansas; Mary Fry of Emporia, Kansas; Kevin Rafferty of Lyndon, Kansas; Dennis Paul Rafferty of Kennebunkport, Maine; Paul Bollin of Pikeville, North Carolina; and Linda Murphy of New York. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Larry Rafferty, Kelly Rafferty, and George D. Bollin.
A man of many passions, Dennis loved Ham radios, Harley-Davidson motorcycles, computers, and farming. He shared his home with his beloved cat, Brat, and enjoyed camping, traveling, and taking cruises, especially to Alaska and Hawaii. He also loved visiting casinos and could always be counted on for a good cup of coffee.
Dennis was deeply involved in his community. He served on the Johnson County Zoning Board and was an active member of the Morning Grange, the Johnson County Farm Bureau Board, the Johnson County Fair Board, and the Gardner American Legion Riders Post 19.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Phoenix Hospice for their exceptional care and to all the family and friends who have provided love and support during this time.
Dennis will be remembered for his service, laughter, and generosity - and for the countless ways he made life brighter for those who knew him.
