Donald spent his early school years attending a two-room schoolhouse in Winifred before continuing his education in Osawatomie, where he graduated from Osawatomie High School. Shortly after high school, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1976 and was later medically discharged.
Following his military service, Donald pursued a degree in nursing. He dedicated much of his professional life working for Home Instead, a caregiving agency, where he compassionately cared for others. His gentle spirit and natural kindness made him well-suited for a life of service.
Those who knew Donald will remember that he was often quiet and shy—though after a few drinks, his laughter would fill the room. He had the best laugh and an enormous heart. He especially loved swing dancing, particularly with his special friend, Kathleen Howell.
Above all, Donald loved his family. He adopted children from his first marriage and loved them as his own. Family was his pride and joy. The words they share about him will forever echo the deep love, respect, and admiration they hold in their hearts.
He is survived by his daughter, Carrie Weaver; his mother, Charlotte Sumner; his brother, John Sumner; his special aunt, Jeannie Muller; his adopted son, Rodney Sumner; his grandchildren, Daniel (Kaylee) Weaver, Austin Weaver, and Kaylin Harrison; his great-grandchildren, Zola Weaver and Raelynn Weaver; and many other beloved family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Russell Sumner; his wife, Patricia Sumner; and his adopted daughter, Deanna Sumner.
Donald will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at 1:30 PM at Leavenworth National Cemetery 150 Muncie Rd, Leavenworth, KS 66048 to honor Donald.
