Gary Lynn Banaka, a brave, generous, hard-working and honest man passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2025 at the age of 81. He was a resident of Olathe, Kansas, where he was known for his humorous, kind-hearted, thoughtful and compassionate nature.
Gary was born on July 14, 1944 in Sabetha, Kansas to Leo and Lillian Banaka. He attended and graduated from Fairview High School “Class of 1962” in Fairview, Kansas.
Gary dedicated his career to serving the community in various roles. He worked as a school janitor for the Olathe School District and served as a firefighter with the Olathe Fire Department. Additionally, he was an EMT with the city of Olathe. Gary also contributed to the community as a transit driver.
In his personal life, Gary was a middle sibling with one older brother and one younger sister. He married Betty Brown and together they raised their two children. A son named David and a daughter named Sherri.
Gary was also actively involved with his church, Victory Baptist Church reflecting his commitment to his community and his faith. His legacy of kindness and service will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 5, 2026 at the McGilley & Frye Funeral Home 105 East Loula Street Olathe, Kansas. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Monday, prior to the service at the funeral home. Following the services at the funeral home, Gary will be cremated according to his wishes. A private family Inurnment will take place at a later date.
