Irene Patricia Gouge, age 98, died on September 4, 2026. Born November 1, 1927, in the state of Wisconsin, Irene was the daughter of Ascension Rodriguez and Mercedes (Benevente) Rodriguez. A lifelong resident of Wyandotte County, Kansas City, Kansas, she was deeply cherished by those who knew her and will be remembered with enduring affection and respect.
From her earliest years, Irene’s steady devotion and thoughtful spirit were evident. She attended St. Bridges Catholic School and never missed a day—an early sign of the diligence, honesty, and love of learning that remained with her throughout her life. That dedication carried her forward as she took a position at Kansas City Business College, where she developed her secretarial skills and excelled at the top of her class. Working by day and attending classes at night, she earned a business degree through perseverance and hard work that inspired admiration in all who witnessed it.
After leaving business college, Irene accepted a position with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County in Kansas City, Kansas. She served as a Switchboard Operator for 26 years, known for her dependable presence, kind-hearted manner, and compassionate way of treating others. Many also remember her generous warmth and infectious smile at the Woodlands Racetrack in Kansas City, Kansas, where she worked part time as a hostess from the day it opened in 1989 until the doors closed in 2008.
A faithful and devout Catholic, Irene’s life was shaped by deep belief and a quiet, steadfast devotion. Beloved by her family and cherished by many, she lived with a sincere attentiveness to others and a gentle generosity of heart.
Left behind to cherish her memory are her several nieces and nephews.
Irene is preceded in death by her husband, Larry Gouge; three brothers, Joe Rodriguez and his wife Draga, Lawrence Rodriguez and his wife Mary, and Pete Rodriguez and his wife Bea; and three sisters, Mary Pacheco and her husband Seledonio, Josephine Torres and her husband Manuel, and Beatrice Fernandez and her husband Henry.
A Funeral Mass will be held at The Cathedral of Saint Peter the Apostle, 416 N 14th St, Kansas City, KS 66102, US, on September 17, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.
