In 1986, James and his family settled in Olathe, Kansas, where he spent the rest of his life. He attended local schools and graduated from Olathe North High School, where he was an active member of the football team during his junior high and played the baritone saxophone in high school.
James worked at numerous places, including Home Depot, where his quick wit and vibrant personality made a lasting impression. Known for his sense of humor and ability to light up any room, James was truly one of a kind—someone whose stories and laughter stuck with you.
He had a wide range of interests, including playing Minecraft, helping as a judge for the Quickie 500 Plane Race—with his father and their friends—and creating ceramic art with his mother and grandmother. He loved bringing smiles to others through art, especially at Meadowbrook Rehab, where he not only painted ceramics but also encouraged others to join in the joy of creating. James was a natural prankster with a playful heart and the gift of gab.
James was a member of Westside Church of the Nazarene, where his father serves as a Pastor. It was there that he found peace and comfort, knowing his soul was right with the Lord.
James is survived by his loving parents, Larry and Penny Mowrey, and his brothers, Joshua and Jonathan Mowrey. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. As you remember James, may you think of him whenever you see an octopus—his favorite animal—or when you enjoy a Diet Coke or a Diet Mellow Yellow. In those small, joyful moments, may his spirit and playful heart live on.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 19th from 3:00-4:00 PM at Westside Church of the Nazarene, located at 1700 W Santa Fe Street in Olathe, Kansas. Family and friends are invited to come together to honor and remember a beloved life, share memories, and find comfort in one another’s presence.
