Margaret Joan South, 91, passed away on August 21, 2026. Born July 30, 1935, in Kansas City, Kansas, Margaret was dearly beloved and long cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing her, remembered for a compassionate spirit and a devoted heart that shaped her home, her faith, and her community.
Margaret attended Wyandotte high school, carrying forward the steady values of her upbringing into a life defined by care for others and a deep commitment to family.
At age 22, Margaret married her husband, and their life together became a lasting testament to devotion. Their marriage endured for 67 years, until his passing at 95 years old, and was recognized with an award for longest marriage at Old Settlers in downtown Olathe—an honor reflecting not only time, but the steadfast love that sustained them.
To speak of Margaret was, for many, to think immediately of baseball. When you heard baseball, you thought of Margaret—an unwavering Kansas City Royals fan who held season tickets and followed the game with loyal enthusiasm. She was also an amazing cook, a dedicated gardener, and a celebrated Christmas decorator whose festive spirit brightened the season and earned awards for her holiday displays. In these everyday joys, her warmth and generosity were evident, offered freely and remembered fondly.
Margaret’s faith remained an important part of her life. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was once involved in a church group that met once a week, a quiet but meaningful expression of her compassionate attention to others and her devotion to fellowship.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon South. She is survived by her son, Steve South. She is also survived by her grandson; Kenny South and a great granddaughter Charlotte South.
Visitation will be held at McGilley & Frye Funeral Home, 105 E. Loula Street, Olathe, KS 66061, on September 2, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
Committal will follow at Olathe Memorial Cemetery, 730 N Chestnut St, Olathe.
