Marlene was born on September 19, 1936, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Lester and Irene (Peterson) Christianson. She grew up on a farm and a ranch, attended a one-room schoolhouse for her early education, and graduated from Great Bend High School. After graduation, she attended art school for a time and carried a lifelong love of drawing and design.
She met her husband, J.D. Murphy, in Larned, Kansas, and they were married for 19 years. Marlene was a business owner who operated women’s dress shops in Larned and Hoisington, taking great pride in her work and in serving her customers and community.
Marlene cherished being part of the Murphy family and, with her husband, J.D., was active in church communities throughout her life. A woman of faith and family, she enjoyed playing the organ, singing in church, and expressing her creativity in many ways. She also had a deep love for animals, especially dogs and cats, which brought her great joy.
Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Irene (Peterson) Christianson; her husband, J.D. Murphy; her stepson, Gary Murphy and son-in-law Marshall Turner.
She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Karin (John) Moglia; and her stepchildren, Janice Roth, Jeanne (Jim) Reynolds, Joni Turner, John Murphy, and Greg (Marilyn) Murphy, along with many extended family members and dear friends who will carry her memory forward.
Marlene will be remembered for her creativity and strong faith. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched and the love she shared.
Her graveside service will be at the Larned, Kansas Cemetery on Friday, February 13, at 10:30 a.m.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered love, support, and prayers during this time. Marlene Murphy will forever remain in our hearts.
