Miki was born on Miyako-jima island which is southwest of Okinawa, where she grew up. When she was coming to the United States, she had hoped to go through Hawaii but instead ended up going through Alaska which was the first time she had seen snow. She worked hard to learn about the United States, and she was naturalized as a United States citizen in July 1969, two days after the moon landing. It has always made it easy for her to remember the timeframe. She was always proud of that accomplishment.
Her other big accomplishment was to start a family and a couple years after her naturalization she had a son, Dale Jr. in which she was excited as she had struggled to have a child. Then about three in a half years later she had another son, Michael. She always did what she could to take care of her family and would work when she could as she stayed home to raise her boys. She always thought it was neat that she worked for a King Radio three times and would start 10 years apart, 1967, 1977 and finally 1987.
Miki was preceded in death by her parents, and sister Hiroko. She is survived by her sons, Michael Melançon, Dale Melançon, Jr., his wife, Tana and two grandchildren, Tamieka and Traeton.
