Opal Irene (Schroller) Meyers Holle, 91, passed away at Olathe Medical Center on February 6, 2021.
Opal was born March 1, 1929 at Oketo, Kansas, the first of three daughters born to Frank and Katherine Gibson Schroller. She grew up on the family farm, attending Bommer School and graduating from Marysville High School in 1947. In 1948, she married Edmund Leo Meyers of Marysville, and they eventually became parents to five children.
In the early years of their marriage, they lived in Manhattan, Kansas. Always the supportive wife, she was employed at Kansas State University while Leo earned his degree. Later, while he attended UMKC School of Dentistry, she worked at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City. In 1958, with three children already in tow, they moved to Olathe, Kansas, so that their eldest son could attend Kansas School for the Deaf (KSD). Leo established the dental practice and they made Olathe their home. In time, two more children joined the family. In addition to the myriad duties of motherhood, Opal was a member of the KSD Mothers Club and St. Paul’s School PTO. She was also active for many years in St. Paul’s Women’s Club, preparing and serving funeral dinners. They had been married for 44 years when Leo passed away in 1992.
Not long after, Opal attended her high school reunion in Marysville and reconnected with a fellow classmate, Gilbert Holle. They later married and enjoyed 19 happy years together until Gil’s death in 2013.
Opal loved music and dancing, flower gardening and staying abreast of current events. She took great pride in her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and especially loved spending time and communicating with them. Opal was completely devoted to her family. She was much loved and will be dearly missed every single day.
She was preceded in death by her parents and infant son, Mark Philip Meyers; husbands, Dr. Edmund Leo Meyers and Gilbert Holle; sister Betty Wassenberg and two infant brothers. She is survived by her sister Donna Tvrdy and husband, Dan, of Lincoln, Nebraska. She leaves five children to mourn her passing: Steve Meyers of Olathe; Carol Yerby and husband, Phil, of Plano, Texas; Paula Janicke and husband, Tim, of Shawnee, Kansas; Martin Meyers and wife, Joan, of Olathe; and Gwen Waren and husband, David, of Lenexa, Kansas. She leaves behind 11 grandchildren: Natasha Meyers; Kimberly Ruggiero; Bryan and Mark Yerby; Christopher and Alec (A.J.) Meyers; Lauren Vargas; Andrew Janicke; and Emily, Olivia and Max Waren as well as two great grandchildren, Max and Mia Ruggiero; and stepdaughter Barbara Holle.
Family and relatives will participate in a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 13, at St. Paul Church, Olathe, preceded by visitation at 10 a.m. A well-deserved celebration of Opal’s beautiful life will be held at a later date, when more of us can be together in person.
