Rodney was born, March 9, 1941, in Abilene, KS and grew up in Emporia, KS. He graduated from Kansas State Teachers College in 1963 with a degree in Music Education. He was a founding father of the Kappa Kappa Psi fraternity and a member of Phi Mu Alpha. He went on to earn his master’s degree in 1971.
A true example of a follower of Jesus Christ. He was devoted to his family, his eyes always lit up when talking about them. A passionate musician, he was a longtime member of the Overland Park Civic Band, the American Legion Band of Greater Kansas City and served as the Music Director at church.
After graduating from college, Rodney moved to Westphalia, KS to become the band and choir director at Westphalia High School where he went on to meet his future wife, Mary Catherine (Cathy Dieker). Rodney and Cathy were married on August 2, 1967, and moved to Overland Park, KS where they raised their family. Rodney spent 35 years as a teacher in the Shawnee Mission School District, spending his summers working with the 3D Paint crew. He immersed himself in his children’s activities and later his grandchildren’s. He was an avid gardener and loved planning and taking trips; National Parks, caves and riding the Durango Silverton were among his favorite activities. Rodney had a keen sense of humor. He loved to send “funny” cards and give gifts that required a special appreciation.
Rodney was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Gwenneth Alderson of Emporia, KS, an infant brother Roger, brother Larry and infant sons Keith and Russell. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Cathy of DeSoto, KS. Sons; Brian Alderson of Edgerton, KS and Kevin Alderson (Meghan) of Leawood, KS and daughter Stacy Jackson (Alan) of De Soto, KS. As Rodney entered into the perfect place that was prepared for him by his Savior, he certainly heard, “Well done my good and faithful servant, receive your reward.”
