Ruby Elliott

She was born July 3, 1922, the daughter of John F. and Clara A. (Fischer) Schenker, the firstborn of two children, on their family farm in Bates County, Missouri. She was raised on that farm and attended Zion Lutheran Church and School in nearby Prairie City. She graduated from Rockville High School in 1940 and then attended Central Business College in Kansas City, Missouri. Since so many men were in the service of our country during WWII, women were asked to fulfill jobs previously held by men, and Ruby accepted the challenge to do a "man's" job at a local trucking firm. While there she received certification from the University of Kansas for Traffic Rate Clerk and Advanced Traffic Rates. She also met her husband, J. Paul Elliott, while working there, and they later married in Chicago, Illinois. Together, they raised their family in Chicago, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Olathe.

During her life, Ruby was active in her children's school- and church-associated activities. She loved to bowl and attend local dinner theater.

Ruby is survived by her daughters, Linda (Brian) Wilcox of Mulvane KS, Sheila (Don) Lutz of Pekin IL, Leila (Robert) Ayers of Olathe KS, and Sara (Carl) Hanson of Lenexa KS; 14 grandchildren, Darren (Monica) Butler of Olathe KS, Cameron (Tiffany) Butler of Kansas City KS, Greg Wilcox of Wichita KS, Kristi (Eric) McCosh of Derby KS, Trevor Lutz of Pekin IL, Tirza (Ryan) Wolf of Bloomington IL, Rev. Elliott (Katie) Lutz of Kernersville NC, Jarrod Lutz of Edwardsville IL, Erin (Fred) Sheffield of Olathe KS, Jordan (Jerica) Ayers of Overland Park KS, Zachery Ayers of Overland Park KS, Jeffrey (Elisabeth) Cooper of Loxahatchee FL, Heather (Sean) Thompson of Shawnee KS, and Brianna (Ben) Grise’ of Overland Park KS; 33 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson; as well as many, many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, J. Paul Elliott, Jr., her parents, her husband, granddaughter Kathryn R. Ayers, son-in-law Dennie Butler, and her brother, Norvin G. Schenker.

Visitation will be Friday, January 1, 2020 from 5-7pm at McGilley and Frye Funeral Home. Due to COVID restrictions the funeral service will be held privately the following day. The church will have the service livestreamed starting at 10:30 am (30 min before the service) on their YouTube site – search for “Redeemer Olathe” where the live stream link will be posted on Saturday, January 2, 2020. Burial will follow at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 920 S Alta Ln, Olathe, Kansas, where she has been a faithful member since 1970, as well as memorial at Olathe Good Samaritan Center, 20705 W 151st St, Olathe, Kansas. The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers of Good Samaritan Center for their love and care for Ruby the last 5-1/2 years.
