The Rev. Dr. Lloyd A. Doyle, Jr, was born in Memphis, Tenn., in 1935. He died Dec. 12, 2019, after almost 6 years at NHC Place at Cool Springs. The care of the staff at NHC Place made all the difference. Known as “Al” his entire life, Al graduated from Central High School (Memphis) and attended Rice University before surrendering to a call to preach. He was a graduate of Millsaps College (BA), Emory University (MDiv), Columbia Theological School (MTh), and Emory University (DMin). Al was a gifted pastor, preacher, storyteller, who was loved by his parishioners. For 44 years Al served churches in a variety of contexts in the Memphis Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. Upon retirement he served three congregations in the Tennessee Annual Conference for a total of 50 years of ministry. He mentored many persons into the ordained ministry and was a confidant and counselor to many clergy over the years.

Al was preceded in death by his loving wife of 45 years, Betty B. Doyle. Survivors include a son, Lloyd A. Doyle, III (Clare), pastor at White House UMC; a daughter, Sally D. Sharpe (Neil), Senior Editor of Ministry Resources and Abingdon Women at Abingdon Press; and four adult grandchildren: Elizabeth Doyle, Lauren Sharpe, Allen Doyle, and Brenna Sharpe.

Visitation will be Monday, Dec. 16, 5:00-8:00 pm at Hermitage Funeral Home, and Tuesday, Dec. 17, 10-11 am. A Service of Death and Resurrection will be held in the chapel at Hermitage Funeral Home, Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 11 am. Entombment at Hermitage Mausoleum.
