She spent five years teaching upper elementary and junior high in Morgan County, Alabama. After receiving her Masters degree from Peabody College, she spent four years at Radford College in Radford, Virginia, where she supervised student teachers. Annie Sue returned to Peabody for further graduate work before heading off to Kutztown, Pennsylvania. She was the Director of the Nursery School and Kindergarten in the Laboratory School of the State Teachers College, as well as teaching college courses. It was in Kutztown that she joined the Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and sponsored the organization of the student branch of ACEI. While in Pennsylvania, she met up with a fellow-Southerner & married Frank Harvey on April 5, 1939. She had met him on the steps of Peabody, the previous summer. He was conducting workshops that demonstrated the use of an audometer. His work took them to Louisville, Ky. and to New Orleans before finally settling back in Nashville. They found a home in Donelson for them, his mother, and their three children, Sue Ella, Hunter and Bettie Ann. In 1948, Annie Sue returned to teaching. For fourteen years, she taught first grade in Davidson County Schools (now metropolitan Nashville) and then served as a Principal for the next ten years. Professional and civic affairs were of keen interest to Annie Sue and she has held offices in many groups. In Virginia, she was President of both Radford City Teachers’ Association and AAUW. For two years, in Louisville, she edited the state bulletins for Kentucky League of Women Voters. She has served as president of the Davidson County Branch of ACEI and Davidson County Education Association. She also held memberships in TEA, MNEA, and life membership in NEA and TN Congress for Parents and Teachers. Annie Sue was a charter member of the Alpha Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and served as Membership chairman as well as the President in 1966-1968. As Membership Chairman of Metropolitan Nashville Retired Teachers Association, she compiled the first Directory. She served as Vice-President for MNEA (1982-83) and also Vice-President of the Nashville Chapter 137 AARP and Vice-President of Shepherd Center Senior Neighbor Outreach. She coordinated a program for “Children around the World” for the Children’s International Center in 1983. Other Activities included training and work in Reminiscence and Respite Care. She helped to organize a local Widowed Persons’ Service, currently known as the Grief and Loss Group of AARP. Annie Sue served as President of the McKendree Resident Council and lead an exercise class that met 3 times a week until she was 99. The mayor and the Governor honored Annie Sue with a Certificate of Appreciation for her work in Senior Citizens while serving on the Board. Davidson County Schools honored her as Superior Teacher in 1962. She was also honored by Metro as a District Coordinator of School Volunteers in 1976-1982. She volunteered by brining Art Appreciation to Children of Charlotte Park (1983-86). During that time, she broke her hip, but managed to arrange (from her hospital bed) for the children of Charlotte Park to view the Grandma Moses Exhibit at Cheekwood. She also arranged for them to have a bus tour of Nashville as well as a picnic lunch in Centennial Park. As a member of St. Philips Episcopal Church, she served on the Vestry and as a member of the Diocesan Committee for Affirmative Aging, and as a 13-year volunteer in the church nursery and as a volunteer in the This-and-That Thrift Shop for 30 years. Annie Sue’s greatest joy came from being of service, helping the community and celebrating family and friendships. She had a humble spirit and a deep sense of gratitude over the riches that life brought to her.
