

GARRETT, Ben High – Age 99 of Nashville, TN., went to be with his Heavenly Father on Saturday, January 15, 2011. Mr. Garrett was born in south Nashville on November 11, 1911, and was preceded in death by his parents Allen Scruggs and Alberta Haynie Garrett, wife, Elizabeth Garrett; brothers, Sam, James, and Joe Garrett; sisters, Jewel Hornbuckle, Carrie Garrett and Frances Barnett; nephew, Joe Garrett. Survivors included, son, Ben H. (Christen Gayle) Garret, Jr.; grandson, Noah Casner Garrett; granddaughter, Megan Coleen Garrett; all of Arcadia, CA; nephew, Doyle H. (Shirley) Barnett , Oklahoma City, OK; nieces, Sue Garrett, Old Hickory, TN; Mary Lou (Bill) Graham, Clarksville, TN. As a graduate of Hume Fogg High School, Mr. Garrett spent his adult years working in downtown Nashville. He was employed at the Paramount Theater in 1930 as an usher, and worked his way to be general manager after thirty-one years of service. For nine years he was sales manager for both the Andrew Jackson and Hermitage Hotels. After “retirement” he was employed at the Information Desk at the L & C Tower for twenty-eight years. He retired at age 89, having loved and worked in DOWNTOWN Nashville all of his life. Since 1933, he was an active and steadfast member of First Baptist Church, Nashville. He served as an usher and greeter for many years. Having been a long-standing member of Civitan International (since the early 1950’s) mr. Garrett served as its’ president in the early 1960’s. Funeral services will be conducted 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 19th at Hermitage Funeral Home with Dr. Frank R. Lewis and Rev. Bill Graham officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the celebration on Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. of Mr. Garrett’s life so that family and friends can remember “Uncle Ben”, as he was so fondly called by many.
