Catherine Guynell Terrell

Age 90 of Old Hickory, Tennessee, passed away January 8, 2017. Preceded in death by parents. R.E. (Em) Terrell and Theo Hicks Terrell. Survived by a loving sister, Dorothy Mouton, of Glenmora, Louisiana and a host of friends. Dr. Terrell received certification as a Registered Medical Technologist from Northwestern State College and Hotel Dieu Hospital School of Medical Technology. After working in this capacity for 10 years, she received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Louisiana College, Pineville, Louisiana. She received a Master of Arts followed by a Doctor of Philosophy both in Psychology from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee.

Dr. Terrell worked with the Tennessee State Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation (now known as the Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities) at Clover Bottom Developmental Center. She began as a staff Psychologist and retired after 28 years as an Assistant Superintendent of the facility. During her tenure, she diligently developed grants securing funds for the facility for building construction and training services for both people who lived at the facility and employees. She often spoke at organizational functions to educate the community and served as a strong and effective advocate for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She also served as an adjunct professor supervising psychology intern students from various colleges and universities.

When not working, Dr. Terrell was an avid fisherman. She was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha social sorority. She enjoyed collecting antique fishing lures and World War II memorabilia. Dr. Terrell expressed the wish that she be remembered as an individual who strived to be a kind and decent person.

After cremation, Dr. Terrell's ashes will be transported to Louisiana. A memorial service will be held at St. Louis Catholic Church prior to her burial in the family plot.
