When I met Fran, she was pretty teenager and high school sweetheart of Bruce, my fraternity brother. She was initially wary of my blunt, northern manner, but she accepted me as Bruce's friend, and it helped that she and I were both math majors. We developed a deep affection, and she always thought better of me than I deserved. The last few years brought me frequently to Nashville for meetings, and I would stay with Bruce and Fran. As lung disease gradually robbed her of physical ability, her sweet, caring nature remained to the end. I was able to spend time with her the weekend before she died and was glad to see her smile at least a few times. A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, she was also a great friend.
