Harris Durell Burton, 83, of Castalian Springs, Tennessee, entered his eternal rest on August 21, 2026. Born September 16, 1942, Durell lived a life shaped by steady work, quiet wisdom, and a love that held his family close through the years.
He grew up on a farm, raising cattle and growing tobacco, where the day’s work was done before and after school—often with a mule instead of modern machinery. Those early years formed the kind of honest, hard-working devotion that never needed to be announced to be known; it simply showed up, day after day, in the way Durell lived.
During the Vietnam War, Durell entered the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant and completed his service as a 1st Lieutenant in 1971. He later retired from the State of Tennessee Department of Health after more than thirty years of service—years marked by loyalty, consistency, and a deep sense of responsibility to others.
Durell was devoted to the love of his life, Wilda Bryant Burton, his wife of almost 59 years. He cherished his family and the comfort of Sunday dinners with everyone together, and he was a steady caretaker—loving, compassionate, and present in the ways that mattered most. Durell showed up for ballgames and award ceremonies for his daughters and later for his grandchildren, offering encouragement not only to his own children, but to other children as well, with a generosity of spirit that made people feel seen and supported.
In the everyday moments, Durell found joy in the things he loved: hunting, watching L.A. Dodgers baseball, cheering for University of Tennessee football, and following Richard Petty in NASCAR. He enjoyed reading the newspaper and tending a garden—especially proud of his tomatoes. In both animals and people, Durell had a caregiver’s heart, offering kindness with a calm steadiness that made him deeply beloved and forever cherished.
Durell was preceded in death by his father, Harris Edmund Burton; his mother, Mildred Louise (Gregory) Burton; his sisters, Lillian Delle Mayes, Delores Spencer, and Ann Craighead; and his daughter, Kelly Renee Burton.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 59 years, Wilda Bryant Burton; his daughters, Lori Loveday (Travis) and Amy McEvoy (Kelly); his grandchildren, Alivia Pody (Grant), Avery Woods (Aiden), Alex Loveday and Rachel Loveday; his step-granddaughters, Chelsea McEvoy and Kaley McEvoy; his great-grandchildren, Archer Allan Pody, Callum Harrison Pody, and Hampton Claire Woods; his step-great-grandchildren, Rhett McDonald and Joanie Eldridge; his sister-in-law, Jimmie Hargis; his special life-long friend, Melvin Everett; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
The family would like to thank the Staff of Quality Center for Rehabilitation and Healing and Gentiva Hospice for the gentle care given to Durell and for the warm attention given to the family members. It is very much appreciated.
There are no services scheduled. Durell will be inurned on his birthday, September 16, 2026, in a private ceremony in the Garden of Peace at Hermitage Memorial Gardens.
