

LIGON, Herschel Cloyd, age 92 of Old Hickory, born January 24, 1918 and passed away Thursday, March 11, 2010. Preceded in death by: parents, James Duncan & Gladys Ware Ligon; first wife, Wydell Lott Ligon; second wife of 57 years, Lillie Eller Ligon; daughter, Herschel Elaine Anding and two grandchildren, Jason Ligon & Julie Thomas. Survived by: sons, Bill (Cheryl) Ligon of Old Hickory, TN and Jim (Gail) Ligon of Cookeville, TN; daughter, Suzy Davis of Oklahoma City, OK; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren and sister, Lanova McCluskey of Old Hickory, TN. Mr. Ligon was a lifelong farmer and the fifth generation to farm the oldest bi-centennial farm in Wilson County, which was established in 1789. He is the owner of the oldest Poland China purebred hog herd in the United States. Mr. Ligon was a WWII veteran having entered WWII on Utah Beach as a Company Commander and helped build the main line of communications from Cherboug to Frankfurt. He was a Charter member of the Donelson American Legion Post 88. In 1970, he furnished his team of mules to be used in the ground breaking ceremony to build Opryland. In 1985, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Poland China Assn. Also in 1985, he was named “Mid South Fair-Farmer of the Year” In 1996, he was named Wilson Co. Fair-“Old Timer.” In 2000, the TN State Fair honored him as their first honoree for the Distinguished Service Award for exhibiting Poland China hogs for 51 Consecutive years. In 2008, Mr. Ligon was inducted into the Wilson County Agricultural Hall of Fame. The family would like to express their appreciation to the employees of Masters Health Care Center, Algood, TN for the excellent care of our father for the last four years. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 14, 2010 in Hermitage Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Reese officiating. Interment will follow in Ligon-Cloyd Family Cemetery. Pallbearers: Josh Ligon, Jack Ligon, Andy Ligon, Lance Davis, Mike Foust, Grant Jackson, Darin Jackson & Lynn McCulloch.
