James Brent Nickerson, also known as country music artist “James Nicks”, died in the afternoon hours of Monday, November 7th, 2022 at his home in Nashville, Tennessee. We lost a beautiful soul, husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and dear friend.
James is preceded in death by his mother, Elsie Mary Nickerson, and his son, Dallas
Nickerson. He is survived by his loving wife, Claire Nickerson, of sixteen years; his oldest son, Austin Nickerson; and his two youngest sons, Taighe Nickerson and Jeremiah Nickerson; by his father, Frank Nickerson; his older brother, Gary Nickerson; younger brother, Daniel Nickerson and wife, Jewel Nickerson; his sister, Deanne Campbell, and husband, Chris Campbell. James was born full of life to Frank & Elsie Mary Nickerson. Even as a young boy he was always full of smiles and laughter that accented his very prominent dimples.
James played as a wide receiver for the Clearfield High School Falcons and after graduating, pursued his education at Weber State University on a music scholarship. He then followed his Christian faith to attend Oral Roberts University in Tulsa Oklahoma, fully funded by a dear family friend, Tom Buchannan.
After school, James worked as a sports reporter for NBC broadcast news affiliate, Standard Examiner daily newspaper, a well-known Salt Lake City television news station covering northern Utah events. James had a popular sports column he coined, “Nicks Picks”, where he would predict the outcomes of various team competition scores. He went on to work for Western Interior Services, which directly influenced him years later to start his own business, Southern Interior Services in Nashville, which he ran successfully for over two decades.
James had many endeavors and performing country music was definitely one of them. In 1989 he tied for first place in the hit television series, “Star Search”, with Ed McMahon. He was largely influenced by George Strait, Alabama, Kenny Rogers, Randy Travis and of course Alan Jackson. He began singing in the church choir and had a prominent country group, James Nicks and the Night Crew, while he lived in Utah. Over the years he has played countless venues across the country. James worked hard and followed his dreams. He was a regular performer on lower Broadway and touched many, many lives with his smile, willingness to help people and his incredible talents in songwriting, playing guitar, and singing. He absolutely loved his family and being a father was the light of his life. He will be forever loved and forever missed.
A private family viewing was held for James on November 12, 2022. A Celebration of Life is planned to honor James on December 11, 2022. Details to be posted soon. In honor and remembrance of James ~ https://.gofund.me/.0d165d8f The Nickerson Family.
