Jane Griffin Rains, age 76 was born October 30, 1942 and passed away December 17, 2018. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jimmie Adair Griffin and Patrick Martin Griffin, Sr.; brother, Patrick Martin “Marty” Griffin, Jr.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Ronald Gayle Rains; son, Patrick Lee Rains; granddaughter, Madeline Grace Rains; niece, Karen Griffin Overstreet, cousin, Jimmy Moore of Atlanta, GA.; Special Friends, Pat Huffines, Teresa Hamilton, Carolyn Hazelriggs, Jean Kelso, Martha Koger, Janice LaRoy, Sherry Lee, Rachel Payne, Sheila Rains, Toni Rains and Annette Wheeler.
Jane was a member of the Old Hickory United Methodist Church. She attended Dupont Elementary and Dupont High School, graduating in 1960. She attended Tennessee Tech where she majored in Elementary Education. While at Tech she met and married her husband Ronald Rains. She graduated in 1964 and taught special education in Cookeville while waiting for Ron to finish school. Their son Patrick was born in October of 1964. After Ron graduated in 1966, they moved to Hendersonville where she taught first grade at Gateway Elementary.
Jane returned to Old Hickory in 1970 and took off work for a few years to stay at home with Patrick and her niece Karen. When she returned to the work force, she began working with the IRS, moved to the Soil Conservation Service, then finally to the Corps of Engineers. She retired from the Corps in 1994 after suffering a partially paralyzing stroke.
Jane loved Old Hickory and lived most of her life in the area. She was one of the founders of the Old Hickory Village Neighbor Association, the Village home tours and was involved in many other community projects in the Village.
She was very artistically talented, creating beautiful ceramics, needlework, oil paintings, etc. The stroke in 1994 ended her ability to paint and tend to her other hobbies, so she coerced Ron into buying a 1918 three story house that was in dire need of renovation. After five years of renovation and going up and down steps all day, they sold it and moved to a one story condo more suited to their legs and age.
Jane was diagnosed with Cancer in 2010. Except for a one year period of remission, she received chemo regularly since that time. According to Ron, she never complained once the entire nine years and never said “why me”. If you came to visit and asked how she was, her reply was always the same, “fine. I’m still taking my vitamins.”
